Random old songs that CHR's mix in

One of the CHR stations in Grand Rapids (where I live), WSNX/104.5, leans pretty rhythmic and focuses mostly on current hits. They tend to repeat songs quite a bit and play songs mainly within the last couple years, which is what most CHR stations seem to do unless they lean Adult.

There's a song from 2004 that I hear on WSNX quite frequently: "Suga Suga" by Baby Bash. I just heard it this morning on WSNX. I like it and am glad to still hear it on the radio, but it just seems out of place.

Are there other Mainstream or Rhythmic CHR stations that randomly throw in old songs from 5-10 years ago amid all the current stuff? If so, who can share good examples of old songs like that which seem bizarre among the rest of the station's playlist?

I was very surprised when Kiss 95.3 WSKX played "Baby Got Back" recently. That song is 20 years old!! They also play "Alway Be My Baby" and "I'll Be Missing You" which fall in the 5-10 year time frame.

"Hey Ya!" by Outkast, which was released in September 2003, still plays occasionally on 106.1 KISS FM in Seattle [KBKS] and Z100 in Portland [KKRZ].

Ahh yes. Golds. "Flavor" songs, a majority of stations have at the very least a few gold titles to break things up.

I have heard all 3 of those on KHKS 106.1 Kiss FM Dallas in recent years. "Baby Got Back" and "I'll Be Missing You" still seems to get played there weekly. "Baby Got Back" is probably the oldest song that can still test at CHR. I once heard that it was deemed as favorite rap song among white people. :)

On Friday, I heard "Hypnotize" on KJ103 Oklahoma City.

Another random song I keep hearing on the CHR stations in Grand Rapids is "Over and Over" by Nelly featuring Tim McGraw (from 2004). I still don't understand why some CHR songs like this stick when so many others are quickly forgotten.

in SA:

KTFM -

Dr Dre & Snoop Dog - Nothin But A G Thang
Notorious B.I.G. - Mo' Money, Mo' Problems
Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy
Jagged Edge - Where the Party At?
Missy Elliott - Work It
2pac - California Love
Nelly - Hot In Herre
Snoop Dogg - Gin & Juice
LL Cool J - Headsprung
Juvenile - Back That Azz Up

During mixshows it's not unusual to hear The Cure, Violent Femmes, New Order, Erasure, Dead or Alive, Freestyle, Digital Underground, etc.

Mix 96.1 -
Blink 182 - All The Small Things
Mario - Let Me Love You
Linkin Park - In The End

On occasion I've heard Sublime - Santeria and Lit - My Own Worst Enemy

Isn't that Hot AC's job to play re-currents and new gold? Those songs might be ok during a flashback show but not in rotation of a CHR.

With that said, KRBE in Houston plays quite a bit of recurrents, such as Justin Timberlake and Akon circa 2005-2007.

Most Hot ACs don't play rhythmic recurrents/gold though, so I think that's why a lot of CHRs pick them up

Other times, I think it's CHRs trying to become Hot ACs during the workday, since they can't repeat currents as frequently during these hours

On my CHR, a bigger rotation to pull from during the day is a plus. Except for Mike Joseph's Hot Hits stations, the majority of Top 40/CHR stations have had/still have a gold playlist. From WABC to Z100, they've all done it.

Pretty accurate description of WSNX musically. I should point out though that our "rhythmic lean" doesn't just mean hip hop. And in fact, our "rhythmic lean" is more and more about the electronic sound every day right now but two years ago it was ALL about hip hop. We're also very mix show heavy on WSNX (20 hrs a week) which also contribute to our rhythmic leaning sound.

The Baby Bash track is one of many older rhythmic tracks we spin like:
BELL BIV DEVOE Poison
HI-FIVE I Like The Way (The Kissing Game)
K-7 Come Baby Come
DMX Party Up
SILK Freak Me
2 PAC How Do U Want It
HOUSE OF PAIN Jump Around
LUNIZ I Got 5 On It
BEASTIE BOYS (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right
FUGEES Killing Me Softly
J-KWON Tipsy

NONE of these songs should sound "out of place" on WSNX as long as the right songs were scheduled on either side of them. Plus WSNX has been Grand Rapids top CHR station for almost 20 years now. We still get calls weekly from listeners who've been with us since those songs originally came out, now they listen to SNX with their kids.

So we win our younger target demos and always have higher than average adult numbers for a rhythmic leaning CHR. In fact, we've even WON the adult demos at night quite a few times. We have history with our audience that most other rhythmic's do not.

AND FOR THE RECORD, god forbid it wasn't my station playing "Over and Over" lol. I was actually assuming it was HOT AC WLHT playin it but it's not, it's WHTS (38 spins of Over and Over in 2012 so far lol)
