Randy Cook out at WGST-AM

"IF a tree fell in the woods.....and nobody was there, does it make a sound...."
Shut it off and save the power bill $$$$$

While I realize that many of the posters on this board consider it an obligation to slam/blast/criticize anything that has taken place at WGST/Clear Channel since the Planet Radio debacle, I actually enjoyed and listened daily to Randy's morning show once I got in my truck for my morning commute. I would have listened to it on my clock radio, too, if their poor excuse for a signal could have penetrated the walls of my bedroom. The choices for a non-left leaning, local flavor, news/sports/info/weather/traffic morning show are pretty slim. Slade's 30 minute loop becomes boring and frustrating to listen to after about 15 minutes. If I wanted music, I'd listen to Sirius/XM or my iPod. Even though from Randy's comments with Rodney made it sound like he wanted to be back at a music station, I thought he did a good job providing all those things I mentioned that I wanted. I still wish one of the station owners out there would relinquish one of their FM signals for a news/talk station and give WSB a run for their money -- I think we would be better off and WSB might actually make some changes for the better, too.

Randy Cook is talented. No question. He did a great job handling the oldies format and he was pretty good on talk radio. Randy wasn't the problem at WGST. The problem is CC, a lousy signal and the apparent inability or unwillingness to do anything about it.

I doubt they can do anything about the nighttime signal short of simulcasting on one of their FM's (105.3 or 105.7). With their diminished ratings and billings, they don't want to put any money into the product, which makes ratings and billings diminish further. Randy Cook was not the problem, but probably what they were paying him was.

Don't forget this:

Coming this October to True Oldies 106.7...Randy and Spiff in the morning!

Apparently, if you read the blog entry, Randy has been in contact with 106.7 (no deal yet). After the noncompete is over...

Thanks Goodtimeandgreatoldies for the tip.....oh wait it is Jal 41. How can that be?

LOOK, I REALLY HOPE THAT RANDY AND SPIFF GET BACK TOGETHER. BUT I HOPE, DEEP DOWN THAT TRUE OLDIES DOESNT DO AWAY WITH FREDDY BROOKS. HE DOES A GOOD JOB AND I JUST HOPE THAT WITH RANDY POSSIBLY COMING OVER THAT IT DOESNT MEAN A JOB LOSS FOR FREDDY BROOKS, TO ME THAT WOULDNT BE RIGHT!

Remember J.J. Jackson? On both Fox 97 and Cool 105.7 he was doing mornings and got moved to midday/afternoons rather than get canned. Worse case, Freddie will get to sleep late. ;)

I miss Atlanta a lot since moving back to LA and one of the things I miss is the WGST morning show. I enjoyed the program when Randy and Spiff were together but I think that Randy still did an admirable job on his own. The show was informative and easy to listen to.

Randy is a talented guy and will find a place on the radio in ATL.

I am surpeised at how critical everyone is of the station. It is actually a pretty good station with a crummy signal.

All you brainiacs who are hoping Randy will wind up with Spiff again over at Puke Shannon's True Oldies are forgetting one thing, Citadel is broke too. The other thing you're forgetting is that Mark Richards is the PD who was in the cockpit when Fox 97 finally nosedived. What make you think he's learned anything about programming oldies since then. Some will say it was Bob Neil, but, insiders will tell you Richards didn't know Sam the Sham from Son of Sam.

Is Mark Richards the PD of the True Oldies feed, or just WYAY? If the latter, he has no hands on the music.

The music played when the station is local (the morning show) is programmed by SOMEBODY and it ain't coming off the satellite. If you think Richards isn't involved in the content of the morning show, think again. The reason Citadel carries the satellite the rest of the day is because it costs them nothing except a few spots for national per hour. The station will never do much better because there's virtually no promotion and they're not proactive in recruiting new listeners. It was a cheap way to add some upper demos to the combo sell AND most importantly they own it (True Oldies) so it's FREE programming.

I believe the music for True Oldies Channel is programmed out of Dallas. One Gary F Reynolds is reputed to be the responsible party. It would make sense to continue the flow to the degree possible during the morning show, but you'd have to ask someone there whther they do or select it locally.

Citadel has no $$ - just like CC. Freddy and Spiff are part time employees with no benefits. No bonus structure. No contract and probably make about $8/hr. Both do it because of their love for the music and because if you can land a job right now in radio you damn well better take it. Richards at TO = don't get me started. Richards at KICKS = the reason the Bull is about to pass them.
