Randy Michaels Show, Part Deuce

Since the topic of Randy's new TV group was unceremoniously moved out of his home town radio-info board... let's talk about Randy's RADIO career. After all--what is MORE Cincy radio than Randy Michaels? Besides, running a TV company has to be just the opening salvo for his next multi gangbuster media company. *NOTE TO MANAGING BOARD EDITOR: That would include RADIO STATIONS.

Randy memories? Opinions? Good guy or mad man?

I just heard on the Howard Stern show that Randy Michaels was at Bubba the Love Sponge's wedding down in Tampa. I found it odd that a big corporate terrestrial radio guy was at the wedding of a satellite radio man. Especially a Clear Channel man, and I've heard that Bubba doesn't much care for Clear Channel. Just thought I'd throw that out there...

I believe Bubba was dumped by CC after Michaels left, and that Michaels was the one who helped Bubba go into syndication at CC. So Bubba would have no reason to hate or shun Michaels if that was the case.

In response to your "memories of Randy" question: I don't have time to be specific, but I have two really bad memories at two different stations: at the first, he lied to me about getting a promotion; at the second, he screamed at me on the hotline for 20 minutes about playing "unauthorized songs" even though I was following the computerized playlist that the MD generated.

So, sorry, all you Randy cult members, I acknowledge that he's done some innovative things, but you can have my place in his hiring line.

Haven't had any personal experiences with Randy, but, from what I've heard, it may be a little of both. It seems like either you love him or hate him with very little middle ground. I knew a couple people who worked for him at the same station at the same time, and both had completely opposite opinions of him. One loved that he was a program-centered manager and felt there needed to be more managers from a programming background because Randy really understood the big picture and how the on-air product fit into it while most managers were from sales backgrounds and knew nothing else. The other felt he was a liar who sold not only him, but also his co-workers, a false bill of goods by telling the staff Jacor was committed to building and growing the station while shopping it around at the same time.

he did a lot of good things 20 years ago.

but the industry has passed him by. no longer the innovator. he wasted a ton of money in Springer and look what happened?

Who is the new Randy? That should be the question...

Randy was involved in the Springer show, but not financially. Jerry had plenty of his own money to keep the show afloat. Randy was consulting Jerry, trying to get him to do a better job with radio basics.

Randy might have bought into the show if he'd bought Air America and kept Jerry on. Or he might have bought the show and added it to the Ed Schultz stable. But Jerry never got past a certain level of radio competence, and the whole thing closed up.

It may be true that now, Randy's just investing in some TV and radio properties to cement his retirement income, and isn't interested in knocking over the furniture like in the past. We'll see.
