Rap becoming acceptable on AC?

In the last couple of days, WJKK Jackson, MS, began playin Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" with Juicy J's rap included. Last summer, they did the same with Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" with T.I.'s rap, and before that, Karmin's "Brokenhearted" with the lead singer's rap. They also played "Party Rock Anthem" as well.

This was unheard of just a few years ago. Are we going to hear more of this on AC?

I once heard an AC DJ say the only rap his station played was "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" by Milli Vanilli. That's back when they were popular.

"How Bizarre" by OMC plays on FM1 (a very conservative Muzak channel), if it is in fact the music played in my grocery store.

These are quite mild compared to what is really considered rap.

I wish I the label would release "Dark Horse" (without the rap) to those outside of radio. I use TM's Prime Cuts for my business and they say there is no official release on the rap-less edit (yet.)

You forgot "Vogue". That has been on AC a long time.

Vogue has been played on Now Defunct Star 93 in San Antonio when it first came out in 1990. Star 93 was an Adult Contemporary station. Though I wouldn't call them a Hot AC, but an AC that didn't play any sleepy elevator music.

Justify My Love also came out that year, and the only San Antonio station that played it was KSAQ Q96, an Urban leaning Contemporary Top 40 station at the time.

You will even hear nowadays Return of the Mack by Mack Morrison on Austin's Mix 94.7 which is a Hot AC format and even Baby Got Back by Sir Mix A Lot but Baby Got Back would play during like a tailgate party show kind of thing.

I can't stand that Blurred Lines song, it makes me want to hit somebody or something.

Any rap on AC is disgusting. Soft Rock should be SOFT ROCK - lite favorites to keep you working at the office. Not "trying to be Today's Hit Music station because we have to play what 29-year-old girls like to hear, which includes rap, and if we don't our ratings will go down in the PPM and we'll flip to Sports or News-Talk". THANK GOD for stations like KQEZ 106.3 in Idaho Falls, 92.5 KSRW in Bishop (CA), WDUV 105.5 in Tampa, etc. who are actual Soft AC stations that I will listen to.

Yes but the target audience 25-54 women like the song.

Soft rock stations are making a comeback in some markets. However most stations are going through the next migration:

1960's: B/EZ
1970's: MOR
1980's: Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Air Supply
1990's: Celine Dion, Michael Bolton
2000's: Mariah Carey, Train
2010's: Bee Gee's, Buno Mars, and (Katy Perry, Robin Thicke)

My timeline is off somewhat, but you get the Idea. Women 25-54 grew up with Madonna, C&C Music Factory, Mark Morrison. So yes AC (pop)songs with rap are acceptable. Salt N Pepa, Vanilla Ice, Tone Loc, are and will be a AC staple.

I still prefer 1980s soft rock over today's stuff...

I can't figure out what you meant instead of "Bee Gees".

How do the Bee Gees get to be a part of that?

There's no way.

Those formats from the 1980s and earlier are what I like.

And, fortunately, I live where I can hear those styles. Not on AC, but you get the idea. And the Bee Gees are there too. "Night Fever" makes no sense, but anyway ...

Hell I'd take the 1990s stuff - yeah Michael Bolton can be a little annoying sometimes but there were some good 90s songs that are just not heard on ACs anymore. The Boyz II Men stuff, Babyface, All 4 One (think "I Swear"), rarer Celine Dion, early Mariah Carey...

No, I wouldn't want any of that.

I'm so relieved not to have heard Michael Bolton lately. He was showing up when my standards station went local during certain times of day, years ago before that station went Spanish.

I don't hear Celine Dion as much as I did.

Give it 10 years or so and you will hear selected rap songs that hit the pop charts on the air. Katy Perry - Dark Horse is a good example. Edgy rock has already started showing up, such as Ironic by Alanis M. 10 years ago that would of been a big no no. Musical tastes are changing.

"Dark Horse" now has a rapless edit. Heard it yesterday on my Cumulus....ahem, Westwood One satellite fed KQFM. Hits & Favorites is defunct as of this month! They just repeat the lyrics: "Make me your Aphrodite, Make me your one and only" again. But in my opinion, any rap on AC is absolutely unacceptable. If I ran middays or afternoons at an AC station I would do everything possible to NOT air rap. Instead of rap, how about something like "Up Where We Belong" as a replacement? I like that song - that's real soft rock. Tnx Joe Cocker!

AC has been playing the "Dark Horse" edit for awhile now. As time goes on, fewer and fewer 40 year-olds want to hear "Up Where We Belong". I believe they were 7 at the time. This would be like me, wanting to hear "High Hopes" by Frank Sinatra!
