Rare tropo in Las Vegas

nd2023

Banned
An approaching tropical storm brings some tropo to Las Vegas.

Many St George and Laughlin stations are in. KCLS 101.5 decoded in HD over local translator K268CS. New log KSSI 102.1 Ridgecrest CA, KAFF 92.9 Flagstaff AZ, KXAJ 93.3 Page AZ, KPLD 105.1 Kanab UT over a strong local.

The highlight of the night was KRUZ 103.3 Santa Barbara CA, 300 miles! I know that station has a monster signal and regularly makes it to San Diego. But to make it to Vegas is impressive! Also had KBFP 105.3 Delano/Bakersfield CA and KVVS 105.5 Rosamond/Lancaster CA.

Tropo is so rare. The high mountains don’t allow the long tropo ducts to form. In order for tropo to occur, the duct must form higher than the mountains in between me and the station.

Nice! I wonder if this duct made it up Hwy 95 into Pahrump, Beatty, etc.?
