Ratings are a Joke, bring on the PPM

What a male skewed book. Forget Movin, which did okay given the sampling. This book was ya ya bad. KUBE is always tops 18-34. Now the WOLF is number one 18-34? Get real. Good station, but not that good. KZOK remains on top 25-54, but next is KISW. KISW number two 25-54? Get real. When males get oversampled and females undersampled you get wild swings. Does anyone really believe John Tesh is the top female show at night? Get real. STAR beat WARM: get real. No where in the country does a dying HOT-AC beat the top AC. Movin killed kiss, but was edged out by KCMS 18-34? Get real. The big winners here were KZOK, KISW, Mariners. All guy leaning. The big flukey jumps were KCMS, STAR and KMPS all impacted by underwieghted females causing wild drops for WARM, MOVIN and KBKS. With all that my three picks one year ago remain strong. JACK, MOVIN and WOLF remain very strong one year later despite the brotherhood of males on this board that love to slam them. KBKS, END and STAR remain my picks for a format change. STAR got a couple of flukey trends in May and June, the other two are dead on arrival. Throw out the Spring and pray the PPM comes to Seattle soon to get rid of these wild sampling swings. Even with the swings Monti finishes top 3 in June 18-34 and top 6 25-54. Go girl! yaya good.

Why and to what format would KBKS be flipped to?

I doubt that Star is going to be flipped; the station is a major-league cash cow which just needs better ratings, which is what their PD mentioned in R&R several weeks ago.

Even as Hot AC stations have had several other formats take chunks of listeners from them over the past decade, they remain top-billing[/b stations in market after market, and KPLZ's soaring ratings in women 35-44 is one positive sign that Kent Phillips's 'reinvention' of KPLZ is working so far.

Why flip Kiss? Because their main competitors KUBE and Movin' are dominating them. Before Monti and the ya ya sisterhood at Movin' came on the scene, KISS couldn't even come close to KUBE. Now with another ya ya player in the market, they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. As far as what they flip through, I'm sure DJDAN can fill you in on what kind of void there is in this market.

Two comments: KBKS could be easily fill the active rock void in Seattle or challenge KUBE with a straight on Rhythmic CHR. Second comment, you seem to be a fan of STAR, maybe on payroll? I truly doubt this new HOT-AC format by their aging PD has anything to do with their ratings success. Get real. Do you really think anyone wants to hear Rascal Flatts into Nora Jones into Nickelback into Akon. The format might have worked twenty years ago, but not in today's complex world of female radio. Thanks for the quote's from Phillipsin the trades, but pick a programmer that is doing something relvent for today's female radio listener:Mamma always knows best and that is always ya ya good

Well I heard that T-Man is out so Monti can jump ship to take over his Seattle & San Fran AM empire. [EDIT]i]

Like I said before. PPM will change ALL of this. No more wild book swings, sure, it will still fall in the hands of certain people, but at least their listening habits will be an accurate depection. From the looks of the latest round of research Rythmic, Rock, AC & Country all stand to benefit from PPM data. But we shall see....

Now, the flips...

KBKS, you think it would be about time. But here is my question. DO THEY MAKE MONEY? My guess is yes. Being the only M-CHR in the market there is a certain amount of business they pull in. We forget people...showBUISNESS....no show without the business. But I think they should refocus rythmic if anything, the ever popular 'format tweak', and thus force KUBE to superfocus on current rythmic music again. As opposed to the light current & heavy gold/re-current thing they are doing to piss on MOViN and mark their heritage territory.

KPLZ, no flip. But I think it will fail. Im sure they are booting themseleves after this book, which represented none of this 'best mix of everything' (BTW.Which super-consultant got paid 100K to come up with that high-school level marketing class slogan?). They will keep some numbers because of who they are and the heritage, but give it a few when their demo figures out that they have messed with stuff. Pretty soon they lose the TSL to make way for huge cume when they become the station that people flip to when their favorite station goes to commercials. And if Im wrong and they do great, we should all set the I-Pod to shuffle and broadcast it.

[EDIT-vulgar content]

Seatacpro is right on the money. KBKS will not flip, but probably should adjust, like KPLZ did in the hot-ac arena. There is room in Seattle for a well-run Mainstream CHR. Successful versions in LA, Dallas, Minneapolis, Boston and all across the country leaned rhythmic long ago and rely on a strong morning show.

KPLZ will not flip. In fact, the station switched its music just as the Spring book started in April. The first phase was terrible, May and June were abnormally huge. The May and June phases put the station number one 25-54 females and #3 25-54 adults for the two months. Something worked, but I believe the jury is out on whether this music format is the fix of Hot-AC. Let's see if the numbers still look like this next year. KPLZ is a solid female buy and won't change format, but jury is out on whether they are an adult 25-54 player. Kudo's to them for trying something different, it certainly didn't hurt their female base and I sure they still bill like a machine.

I doubt any station will flip. KQMV is still better than KLSY was this time last year, JACK has morphed into an effective Classic Hits beating KJR-FM and KBSG. WOLF is a player in Country. KPLZ is on the rise, while KBKS and KNDD fill solid format positions, the stations just need adjustment.

The Seattle market remains stable and pretty simple to buy from an advertisers point of view. KCMS remains the station that continues to surprise me coming in with another very strong book.

okay partners, let's all calm down. Here is my take:
KBKS needs to revamp, but not flip. More rhythmic and a new morning show. Why not look in market. Eric Powers has solid numbers and T-Man isn't leaving. The afternoon show on Star actually outperforms mornings if ya look at the Spring book. Kent and Alan aren't leaving. Marcus D had huge numbers and could do mornings. Lots of ways to improve KBKS without flippin
WOLF is a player and is going no where. Country will be one and two in this ole market by Fall once the Mariners are over. KMPS ain't going no where either.
KPLZ actually started this music change at the end of the Winter book according to the article in R@R and posts on this board. To my reading that means they had one crap trend in April and Two GREat trends in May and June. Playing Country is gutsy and smart, but after the novelty wears off will women really want to hear Big and Rich, next to Akon and Creed??? I admire them for doin somethin and it paid off, but long-term???
The END. Just get rid of Corolla and the LAzlo show and play music. Alternative stations are about the music. Would be nice to hear rock based station that played music in the morning, now its all talkkklllkl.

thats my take

If the introduction of PPM in your fine city results in a duplication of what recently happened upon the introduction of PPM in both Philly & Houston, do not be surprised if KMPS gets a 40-50% boost in their cume.

Let's take another look at why STAR could be doing so well....Chris Daughtry has had 2 smash hits in the last few months...plus new jingles and energy is taking place on many HOT ACs all around the Country. HOT AC may indeed be on the rise across the Country. With PPM Country will see it's true popularity come back to the ratings in most of the country. Spanish formats were hurt the most by PPM in Houston and will see like PPM numbers across the country...the weighted diary days are over. Accuracy will return to ratings with PPM.

100.7 The Wolf is for real! They will be #1 or two with KMPS in the fall.
Star has gotton a new lease on life...respect too...but for how long is the major question. So Star is up big without female numbers...watch out.
WARM will rebound.
Movin is still growing and will compete with Star for females in the coming months and years. This will be a battle to watch. The question to ask is how HOT AC can outperform a Rythmic HOT AC like Movin due to years of Rythmic leaning Top 40 which we all grew up with.
KCMS may be that strong...just look at KLTY in Dallas. A good Christian AC is going to beat a regular AC due to a more broad demo.
Regular AC, Oldies and Classic Hits will be out in 10-15 years. Classical and Adult Standard are already out with the rare exceptions of markets with HUGE retirement populations right now.

On the subject of the PPM. It may not make it to Seattle. Industry disgust over the price, the erratic numbers and stories of dogs carrying the PPM around aren't helping. The reason stations were buying the PPM is that they hoped it would increase business. So far, the two markets that have the PPM have seen no increase in business. Agencies are skeptical of the accuracy and the two Philadelphia books show the same wild demo swings as the diary method. Urban, Rhythmic and Hispanic broadcasters may sue, due to under-representation. This is not good for radio. I expect big changes in the PPM before it gains acceptance, or a complete overhaul. Lots of bugs to work out.

On the Seattle book. Wolf is definitely for real, STAR did gain audience primarily in women, but that drove adult numbers bigger too. Hot-AC is still generally down nationally with a couple of notable exceptions, including Seattle. KRWM is not over and will rebound with Christmas music, though I believe KCMS is real. A four book proves their success. Dallas is an excellent example of a strong Christian format station like KCMS.

PPM is not the answer. No one is really going to wear that thing. Put it in peoples cell phones and turn it off and on as you need samples. KISS is in trouble they need to make the move to Churbin and get it over already. The End needs to move Lazlo to mornings and dump Adam. The Wolf is the real winner but where does not having a PD and looking for one leave them?

PPM is the closest thing you're going to get to perfect for now....KISS to Churbin is a bad idea and Lazlo doing anything except picking up my trash every monday is also a bad idea. he's bad enough in PM drive, why move him to AM drive?

If he moves to mornings, who replaces him in PM Drive? You can't just put another mediocre DJ on. If you do, then what really can you accomplish as you attempt to save the station.

Concerning KNDD flipping Lazlo to mornings:

Bring back Dick Rossetti - again

The Wolf had a great last few trends, which made for a great book. But as we all read in All Access a couple weeks ago: 'Lobo to Mid-days, and Possum back to afternoon drive' which starts today. How were Possums numbers when he was on air? And will a new PD come in and change things to his liking, or is he to come in and just hold the fort down?
