Ratings are out

Well the ratings are out and I am saddened to see WDRC slip again this time from second to third. WWYZ has pulled ahead of WDRC and WRCH is in First.

I believe this period is when WDRC changed its imaging and started adding songs from the 90's into the mix.

We will have to give it a few months to see if people came back or if he change was ultimately a bad move for DRC.

I am not use to the new imaging and feel it is better then when they first started with it, and am also happy to hear a real jingle mixed in from time to time. Although some of the songs from the 90's just don't feel right on DRC.

Ron Sadalie has been a great addition to nights though. Who care if hes voice tracked on many of those nights, hes local and seems to love what he does.

No station is what they were 25 years ago. If they are, they're in deep trouble. No business should ever stay stagnant.

I commend DRC for innovating, even if the old folks aren't nuts about it. Grahame's looking forward and is bucking the trends. She's not slave to one of the big C companies and can think outside the box. She's incredibly lucky to be in the position that she's in.

The songs that CBS-FM was playing in the 70's were 20 years old. They mixed in recurrents as well. Those songs are almost 60 years old today. What songs are 20 years old today? songs from 1993.

Again: No station should sound like they did in 1981. Or 1991. Or 2001. Every station should grow and change to fit a growing and changing marketplace and audience.

Reely: I know this post is about WDRC FM but, according to you, NO station should ever sound like it did in 1981 or 1991. Brad Davis has been the morning man at WDRC AM for what.. thirty years now (and he isn't Bob Steele). Oustide of the format change to conservative talk, Davis has been doing mornings at WDRC AM forever!!! "Looking forward and bucking the trend"? Hardly. I just went to the WDRC AM web site for what they are actually are programming, and the only program I could find being mentioned is the current program, Dave Ramsey, which I believe was taped from Thursday. Months of ratings in the sub 1 category isn't innovation, it's stagnation. Either go progressive, simuclast WDRC FM or go back to the format from the 80's! WDRC FM is doing fine. WDRC AM and its sister stations ARE in deep trouble. Now you all can attack me.

If you remember correctly just a few months ago before the change WDRC was #1 even beating out WRCH.

No this is not WDRV from 25 years ago, which is a good thing. :)

These changes were slowly phased in. This was not a sudden "switch."

Of course, ProgressiveTalk wants to get his dig in at WDRC-AM and any program that doesn't exactly mirror his political ideology. Brad Davis is a perfect example of why change is necessary. Ol' Leatherneck is boring as hell and out of touch. I'm with you there.

However, how do you fire BRAD FREAKIN' DAVIS. You don't. His listeners are incredibly loyal, and will be until the day they die (in the next 3-5 years.) WDRC's problems aren't a programming issue, they're an Amplitude Modulation broadcasting problem.

Once more, with feeling. It doesn't matter what you air on any AM station. The listeners aren't coming back. Once they're gone, they're gone forever.

Yes, I know that Davis has been at WDRC AM for many years, but the management had no problems firing Dan Lovallo or WTIC AM had no problems showing both Bruce Stephens and Colin McEnroe out the door. It can be done, if they want to. And no, I am not advocating firing any one.

I see WRCH and Country 92.5 are still hot in the books.

On WDRC Maybe Grahame can get the classic Casey Kasem AT40's from the 70's or 80's on the station.

As I know WORC and WTIC drop the shows just weeks ago.

I used to listen to AT40 back in the 1970's on the big D like many of us did..

I'm glad that the big D is still on the top.

Dan Lovallo did not have the heritage that Brad Davis does. WDRC inherited Dan Lovallo when they purchased WSNG 610 in Torrington - the first station that Buckley purchased for their AM network in Connecticut.

Brad Davis is in a different league than any of those guys. The last CT broadcaster with that kind of heritage was Bob Steele. Not saying they were on equal ground, Steele is an entity of his own... but Brad's from that era. Colin McEnroe was 2 years old when Brad Davis got his first radio gig in 1956... and that was after serving in the Marines.

Also, WTIC-FM still airs AT40 - The 80's, so that's off the table for DRC-FM.

Not sure if your talking about DRC FM or not, but if you are talking about DRC FM then it certainly was a sudden switch. There were posts here before the site crashed with people who were upset at the switch to "Biggest Hits" when the imaging was changed all the jingles were removed and the 90's made their way onto the DRC playlist.

Needless to say there were a number of DRC fans here who were not happy when the change was made.

I know it drove me to listen to CBS-FM, WLNG and "other" alternatives.

While it may not be the shared opinion, I know the 90's could be better integrated into the playlist. When I hear stuff that's not recognizable by more than just me I know I'm not alone. It's sad as I like listening to Ron but i won't subject myself to some of the garbage spewing out of 102.9 MHz on my dial.

WFSB-TV channel 3 actually showed a brief clip of that during their 40th anniversary special, back in November 1997. They showed a clip of him intro'ing Leslie Gore.

If I'm not mistaken, I think it was also known as "the Milk Show" and part of it was shown in the CPTV special that recapped Connecticut television history.

Maybe DRC-FM can pick up "The Amazing 80s" hosted my Machine Gun Kelly. I remember DRC-FM carried one of MG Kelly's other shows several years back - I think "Amercian Hit List."

There is also a show "Backtracks USA" with Kid Kelly which has an 80's and a 90's component to it. I don't know if anyone in the Hartford market airs it but WMAS FM in Springfield airs both from 8-midnight on Sundays. There is also a show with a former MTV Veejay whose name I don't remember that airs in some markets during weekends.
