Ratings Battle:WPEN vs. WIP

What keeps WPEN going is THEY TURN A PROFIT. 2nd most in the Philly cluster. Despite poor ratings, the Sports Radio demo is a money maker. And trust me, the Sixers, Flyers, and Union isn’t doing much for them. Financially or ratings wise

I always find it interesting when folks assume a station is doing poorly based on ratings. This is business, and in business, it's all about the benjamins. If there are two sports equipment stores in the same town, and store #1 has a better reputation and is always more profitable than store #2, it's not like store #2 is just going to close up shop and go home. As long as a business is making money, it's a going concern.

Back to radio, it doesn't really matter why a station turns a profit (Sixers/Flyers/Union games, etc.); what matters is that it turns a profit. WYSP was on the air and profitable for years based largely on the strength of one four-hour block that aired on weekday mornings. Profit is profit.

It's fun to have a little good natured ribbing at the disparity, since it can be a little eye popping at times. But we all know the free numbers are worth what we pay for them in the end. Bottom line for the cluster strategy matters, and when a component is playing its part in the numbers that actually matter....the good natured ribbing is just that, not a serious suggestion of a proverbial shoe about to drop.
