ratings explanation please

You have to know the weekly cume number to answer the question. Could be as high as 200,000 weekly cume (unduplicated listeners) in a market the size of Atlanta (population about 15.3 million). 200,000 people with the right qualitiative numbers can be a very sellable audience. It is all about the revenue! Don't know what GST brings in, but I suspect the revenue vs expense of operation is pretty good.

Stop the presses when did Atlanta's population reach the 15.3 million mark? I think the Georgia as a whole is probably only 10 million?

It's only off 65% year to year, pretty good indeed.

Atlanta's 12+ population for the Spring survey is 3,860,100. In theory a 1 share would be 1% or 38,601 people.

:-[ Sorry 'bout the population -- looked at the wrong market.

A 1 share would only be 1% of radio listening. As much as we like to believe everyone listens to radio, it is unlikely 100% 3.86 million people in Atlanta listen. But you are right, a 1 share is not much.

what is a 1 share equal to in Atlanta?

As others have pointed out, it depends upon the time and the demo you're looking at, since share is based on listeners rather than total population.

Just for the heck of it, to put some real numbers to it, I grabbed an Fa05 and took a look.

P12+, Mon-Fri 6a-10a, a 1 share (AQH) was equal to about 8,000 people, around 25th place.
P12+, Mon-Su 6a-12m, a 1 share (AQH) was equal to about 5,600 people, still around 25th place.

Hopefully that gives you some idea of what you were looking for.

Middle GA seems to have the answer. But contrary to posters above, a 1 share is 1% of the people listening in an average quarter hour. A share is not 1% of the population. Shares are the numbers reported on Websites such as Radio and Records.

A 1 rating is 1% of the population (and not just of the people listening). So if a station has a 1 rating from 10AM-3PM, 1% of the people in the Atlanta metro are listening. Media buyers see ratings numbers, but the general radio geek public sees only shares (even though we call them ratings).

Both ratings and shares can be reported for 12+ or for any demo.
