Ratings: July 2011

The 6+ numbers are up here:
http://www.radio-info.com/markets/philadelphia

The story continues to be the decline of WIP. Down slightly from a 1.8 last month to a 1.7 this month. Now losing to WHYY in cume not just in share. WPEN, on the FM side only, has almost as many people listening as WIP. Add the AM-only listeners (we don't know from these numbers how much overlap there is between WPEN and WPEN-FM) and it probably has just as many. And in total combined AQH share, the stations are now tied (albeit at an anemic 1.7 each).

I still think it's baseball-related. The market has changed. People here like and follow baseball now that the team is winning. I think the combined ratings of WPHT and WIP would be higher if the Phillies games were on WIP,and WPHT was airing its usual political talk. But whoever posted about the NFL lockout, in a thread about prior month, made an excellent point. With the Eagles stocking up for a Super Bowl run, we'll see how the ratings are in August.

My reason for not moving WIP to FM was always that WIP was successful on AM and you don't blow up a successful AM format. But now that's not the case anymore.

Beyond that, the only thing that jumped out at me is a dip for WMMR. But for one month, hard to make too much of it. If anything, it's interesting to see the amount of consistency in the numbers.

Not much their either. It won't matter especially if, er, when YSP flips.

Elsewhere, Radio 104.5 still rising back, making us forget about those few odd bad books they had.

The biggest standout to me is Wired is still slowly sinking further and further away. Wasn't all that long ago they were right behind Q.

I think in the case of both sports stations, content is the issue. Philly is a great sports town with most of their teams doing well, yet both stations are tanking. The hosts on both are unabashed homers and bring little to the table. WIP's morning show is unlistenable, and while I like Mike & Mike, Philly needs an entertaining, locally based morning show. Miss is a sanctimonius tool, and Eskin is only a slight upgrade. I don't even bother listening at middays or night. It's music the 'net or TV.

CBS has a unique opportunity here. If they can overhaul the WIP lineup by mixing in some younger, better prepared hosts and move it to 94.1 with the Eagles and bring over the Phillies (keeping conflicts on 1210) I think they would have a big winner. If done right, it would eventually chase 97.5 out of the format. I'd rather have one well programmed sports talker than two crappy ones.

Agree with just about everything you said. It speaks volumes how badly WIP is underperforming if they are tied with 97.5.

97.5 is a train wreck. That station is incredibly mismanaged with inexperienced unprofessional hosts getting air-time in the 4th largest media market in the usa.

Pleae tell me that WIPs Morning Show is coming to an end?

Philadelphia is the 4th Largest Media Market.

8th largest Radio Market.Which is a bit perplexing as most Philadelphia radio stations are heard well beyond the Philadlephia arbitron parameters. I was on the beach in N Wildwood last week and got 610 WIP,WYSP,WMGK,KYW,1210 loud and clear on my MP3 player.

Size has to do with population within the market's ADI (area of dominant influence.) Sometimes markets will extend their geographic areas to maintain or increase ranking. Despite losing population over the last decade, Philly should not fall out of the top ten anytime soon.
