Ratings of Non-Commercial Stations

Non-commercial stations in Portland do show very well in the ratings; in fact WMEA is the highest rated station A25-54, Mon-Fri 6a-7p, above of WPOR and WFNK. WMEA also wins the 12+ Mon-Sun 6a-12mid beauty pagent numbers. WMSJ is tied for 10th with WCLZ in this same demo and daypart.
You need to manually add them to the stations to be ranked. If you simply click "in the book" or "metro" it will not include these stations.

Congrats to Maine Public Radio, the highest rated radio station in Portland Maine

do you know of any ratings for northern vt? (NEK)
always curious to know how our college station is doing
and hell if possible how I do..

Is Lyndon State within a market? One that really has a showing on Arb? I don't mean that as insult--but it's not exactly near any bustling metropolises (sic) (Berlin, I suppose).

Of course, I started in Elmira, NY--and I was always shocked we had our own market. Our chief residents were cows and prisoners!

Caledonia County (where Lyndon State is located) is part of the Montpelier-Barre-St. Johnsbury metro defintion, as are Washington, Orleans, and Essex counties. As for non-comm ratings for that market (and all markets for that matter), I believe you have to be a subscriber to have access to any non-comm data, even 12+ numbers.

Oz, my suggestion to you is to build contact with radio people in St. J, or even in Barre-Montpelier. Maybe they'll tell you what you want to know. Maybe they'll even give you your first chance in commercial radio.
Edited by MassMusicMan on 02/15/06 11:33 PM.

Oh please, like he's going to do that. I haven't been on this board long but I've been on long enough to see this guy wants his radio career handed to him on a silver platter. Time and time again he's told to get in touch with actual radio people and shake hands and network, but he's done nothing that I can see!

Ozman-- with a little attitude adjustment... or make that a LOT, and the willingness to work some long hard hours for next to nothing pay, maybe you'll do well in real radio.

When I first got into radio many years ago, I asked my PD about Arbitron. His reply:

"Arbitron is a sales tool for those who don't know how to sell radio. Know your audience. If you know your audience, you'll do fine."

Blank stare from me then. After a while it all started to make sense to me...both from a sales and a programming angle. Of course there are those who live and die by the numbers. I pity them. The only numbers one should be concerned with in radio is your station's dial position, your stations phone/fax numbers and (if you're a salesmonkey*) your sales figures. Just my unsolicited thoughts..

Peace,

* I use the term "salesmonkey" in the least derogatory way possible. They make my salary possible. But I also make theirs possible. So a little name-calling is in order. I hate it when they call me a "disc jockey"...I'm an ENTERTAINER, dammit!! So they become salesmonkeys. When they begin to refer to those of us in the air studio as entertainers...or at the very least announcers...I will try and remember to refer to them as account executives. Really, I will. :) [/rant]

I have been working on contacts. I even got a chance to visit some radio stations. WBAB, WXRK (formally k-rock nyc) WCCC to name a few. It has helped me out a lot.
bash me all you want it what to be expected on the board.
I go to lyndon state college to be Meteorology Major. i have enough trouble already trying to find enough time to do my radio show (skiing too much)
I have is I only have 1.25 years of on air radio experience and in that 1.25 year's my on air personality has improved a lot (I have plenty of air-checks of my show to prove that one). when I have 5 or more years of on air experience I can understand you going down on my back for going nowhere in radio.
I already have enough pressure from certain people that have tried to get me off the radio permanently (jelouscy 101???) and did. I'm back because some people thought it was unfair and love my show and decided to something about it. (I can't thank enough to the people/student's who somehow pulled that one off)

thanks for the idea.
I have been.
one of the things I need to do is try to make a professional sounding demo.
i have looked at the ratings for our market. the problem:
non-commercial stations not included.

(p.s. to any tos listener;
tos does come in here in lydonville VT :) only when you are facing east and you have something at least 10ft high to catch the signal)
the exact opposite is true for 99.9 wbtz the buzz
(now if I con only find a stationary location where I can get both...)

Arbitron always lists non-comms. You just have to know how (or really, where) to look. Of course, if no one records it in the diary--you're not going to see it. College stations very rarely show up. Think about who listens to a college station. Not the folks Arb is going to throw a diary at-that's not to say college radio isn't vital, doesn't have listeners or is trash. It's just a rarity.

Oz-I'm not sure why people are giving you crap-based on your profile you seem like a good egg. But please, use a few periods, maybe an apostrophe or two. One thing is true-you'll never get hired if you can't communicate effectively. That's 99% of what we do.

Plus, one of my gigs in New England was based on a comment a PD saw me make on this very board. I throw that in to remind you--you're making an impression with every post.

Man, am I preachy tonight. Must be that sappy ending to the 40 Year Old Virgin.

Nice Star Wars reference in the name. Or was that just coincidence?
