RATINGS PREDICTIONS...

What will change...no fair waiting for the actual ratings to come out...who goes up and who falls? Its all conjecture, but at least its something...

This should be an interesting book, as the rock market in Anchorage has changed drastically in the last few months. KZND is now on the air with their new signal, while not great, neither is KWHL's, really, whether that will be a factor or not is yet to be seen. KBFX is now going head to head with KRPM so that'll shake things up for those two stations, wait and see, I predict now that a format change will come of this for either of those two stations, Anchorage has proven time and time again that two classic rock stations can not coexist.

The pop battle in Anchorage will continue to be unkind to KFAT. KGOT is a stronger station, with more money to throw at kicking KFAT's ass than NNB is willing to spend to return KGOT's favor.

Bob will do one of two things, it'll either go WAY up, or go WAY down, but I don't see it doing anything in between. I think that 102.1 The Buzz is headed for disaster as they have almost completely backed off the alternative tracks and are now going head to head with Mix. Stupid idea given the fact that they were #1 in demo last book with the alt tracks, while Mix was a distant #3. Would've been interesting to see how they would have held up against KZND, 102.1's signal is far better than the End's, I think that they would have definitely put up a good fight. I do not see KZND cutting in to KWHL's audience much. KWHL has Bob and Mark and they just have a more interactive feel than KZND, especially since the End is VT'd out of Hawaii. Wonder what will happen to 94.7 in the long run if KZND's format fails. Maybe Anchorage will get its first latino station ::) Sure hope not...

It will be a good country book again, kinda goes with out saying. KENI will continue to own KFQD, while KBYR and KUDO won't even be a factor. Does anyone even know that Air America programming is on in this market? Blow it up and bring on All Comedy Radio, now THAT I would listen to!

I'd like to see a properly promoted FM talker come on, I miss Tom Leykis, Don and Mike, etc...from the old KADX days.

What does anyone else think?

Good country book again? It should say improved country book. Both KASH and KBRJ had down books in the fall with KASH's only real saving grace being a good performance in Women 25-54. Chalk it up to diary placement, soften interest in the music, etc. K-Bear has had two down books in a row...so the last book wasn't that great for either station. With that said, Country should bounce back in the spring performance. If not...questions will be bouncing around...

So, the book comes out sometime in the next 2 weeks...anyone want to make any last minute predictions??

It seems KZND is already compensating for what'll probably be an unimpressive book, they've got a CP on file with the FCC to put their xmitter up higher. That will greatly improve their signal into Anchorage. Now all they need is good programming :D.

cause they....uhh.... cant take the heat? I dont know.. the 'goat'? and is that bad? Cause... I didnt do it.

seems you and me are the only ones who talk on here anymore!

First off, there aren't all that many people in radio in Alaska. Then there's the problem of long-time non-participation on this board or others. Some of it could be that the a majority of the few people actually in the business don't even know this board exists. Not that they know any other broadcast board exists.

I've tried to encourage folks at the stations I work with to at least try this Alaska board to keep up with stuff around the state or to look in on the boards dedicated to their specialties but there seems to be a sort of parochial attitude of not caring if anybody outside the immediate market hears about what they're doing and they don't much care about what might be going on elsewhere in the state.

Had any luck in convincing folks you work with to even log in as guests?

I don't believe I've had any luck with it, but then again, it's tough to tell. I know who spoondj is, but I don't have the foggiest guess who you could be, whether you're with Morris, Clear, NNB, or TATI, I've not a clue.

I worked in AK radio for 6 years, stops at KZND/KNIK, KFQD/KWHL, The Buzz, KRPM, then when I went to college in Fairbanks for 3.5 years I was the APD and afternoon guy for KXLR (Classic Rock) for half the time I was there, and held the same position for KWLF (CHR/Pop) for the rest of the time.

I would agree that people in Anchorage couldn't care less about the other markets, but I gotta say as an Anchorage transplant who's seen it and done it in Fairbanks, I understand their point of view. Fairbanks has to be the WORST market around.

Now, working outside of radio, trying to get a p/t weekend show somewhere. Anyone know of anything? :D

And, no, being on KGOT isn't a bad thing, they're doing really good these days. For years KFAT had them down, by a lot, but now it seems KGOT is becoming the dominant station again. I don't think this has anything to do with it, but I'd rather see the only station in Anchorage that has predominantly live content win over a station that is mostly voice tracked.

I've worked with KNOM over in Nome off and on for the last 34 years. After retiring from marketing with a company that makes TV production equipment in '96 I went back there and did their engineering and overnights (voice tracked) for another 7 years and still wander back to do some engineering and record spots. I'm also doing a few spots for KFMJ in Ketchikan. None of that stuff for money; just to keep a hand in. Never have worked in Anchorage.

Ah, Fairbanks! I am the guilty party who taught Jim VanNort how to do news three decades ago. Of course he forgot all those skills the minute he landed in Fairbanks after a couple of years in Nome. Haven't talked with him in several yars though we still have mutual friends.

Sorry I don't know about any p/t gigs available. I wouldn't mind doing an occasional vacation fill-in or something but it's far enough from Wasilla to Anchorage that I haven't put any effort into that.

We probably should have a mini-convention in Anchorage but there'd probably be too few of us to fill even a decent sized table at some bar!

Ah, Pete VanNort...how he made my days at the competing stations way, WAY more fun! It was sweet having worked in radio for less than 10 years and absolutely slaughtering a guy who's done it since before I was born. The ego boosts he gave me on a consistent basis!

I kinda miss doing radio, but I honestly think that my days of working it full time are over too, too much bs, not enough glory, ya know?

When Pete arrived in Nome he was either 17 or 18 years of age and had "enhanced" his resume with "experience" he acquired through building/running a small pirate station in California. He morphed from "Jim" to "Pete" because there were already several "Jims" at the station. Beyond all doubt he was the greatest natural radio talent I had ever heard. And he only got better as time moved on. I haven't heard him on the air since Nome so can't comment on his recent work.

As to missing doing radio....

I discovered back in 1968 or so that there was not enough money in it for an "average" talent so made the switch to TV engineering. Then to the manufacturing side. Best move ever! Lots of great travel, fun work, and financial reward far beyond anything in broadcast (unless one is among the top 10 or so talents in the country). If you've achieved success in another field you're likely far better off but always have the option of "dabbling" in radio if you put a little effort into finding a weekend or p/t gig. For nearly 30-years I've said it: "Radio! A great hobby!"

If there are even a few people interested, I'd gladly do the coordination and arrangements for an "Alaska Board" get together some weekend in Anchorage or other convenient spot. If any of you want to do that, but don't want to do so online, please e-mal me at: [email protected].
