Ratings Ramblings

I just noticed the ratings from 3/22. KDF seemed to stomp the competition. Interestingly, I never even listen to them anymore now that I can get WLX, but they must be doing something right (or other guys something wrong). My guess is 95.5 morning crew is annoying listeners and 98 plays the same songs OVER and OVER and OVER (I change to 95 after B-Bones). I enjoy Bobby Bones in the mornings, but have noticed a lot of repeats during the show, as if they're recording segments and replaying them every other hour for a different group of listeners. VERY annoying if you listen from 6-9:45.

I'm interested in seeing if Way's new signal gives them a half-share bump within the next year; factor that and KLove against the Fish and their onslaught of billboards.

[On a side note, I moved to Columbia and enjoy listening to small town radio much of the time, such as WLX Power97. WKOM has more wasted potential of any station.]

You're right.. I offered 12-80 two communicative chances to get an FM (AM Repeater/Translator).. I had one approved for Columbia at 60 watts to repeat another non-com FM... But, they didn't get back with me.. They could of bought it for a decent low price and repeated 12-80 with an increase of 250 watts anywhere in the highest point of Maury County... Would of had a great flow over Columbis and up to Spring Hill... Sold it to your favorite Country station in the local region! Roger and WLX will take it to shore up the signal with the 60 or so watts down on the low side of Columbia and Mt. Pleasant....

On paper I couldn't understand why 97.5 would need a translator so close to their 42kW signal, but in reality, it's not even listenable in Columbia. Sad considering the 42kw tower is only ~15-20 miles away, over rough terrain. On the Columbia subject, 88.7's directional signal blows my mind this far South. It comes in much better than 97.9.

The hills with peaks and valleys run from the south side of Columbia and then trail to the southwest down towards the area east and south of the country airport... They're like monster pimples on the face of the area between Columbia-Mt. Pleasant down through Lynnville and into downtown Pulaski... LINE-OF-SITE..... That's why he needs it... Glad he's got it.... ;)

88.7's signal is pretty pitiful north of Downtown though. If it were not for all the translators Wayfm would only cover about half of Nashville in my Opinion.

Yep which is why 89.9 FM has signed on to the North airing 88.7's programming.

I decided to listen stream Huntsville's 104.3 WZYP at work today, as I've become accustomed to listening to it on my commute South of Brentwood. Cumulus is crazy to not mimic ZYP. The jingles are the EXACT same, the coverage starts where the other's ends. It doesn't really affect me much, as I'm out of i106 coverage zone (except when at work), but ZYP sounds SO much better than i106. They clearly have little to lose. They may be able to bring in some of those, like myself, that's preference falls between 92.9 and 107.5.

I know 92.9 is the highest rated Nashville station, But it is truly awful in my opinion. I can think of many other AC stations across the country that I can listen to, But not Mix 92.9.

The identity of 92.9 in Nashville is unique and wins in ads and ratings with the target... Their home base anchor in Evansville, is totally a different approach to a mirror targeted age group... But, in a different market with a more blue collar lifestyle, thus a winner in its identity.. www.wiky.com ... Knoxville, another totally different approach..

South Central just doesn't understand that the only way to handle stations in multiple markets is "one size fits all" ... all of the big boys will tell you it's true... ::)

Wow!!! Some folks are defending Mix and South Central? WTM? (What the Mix?) Mix is still one of the, if not THE, highest rated (in actual numbers...13-15 shares) AC or any formatted stations in America. South Central is a group that has live, local talent, not VTed, not shipped in from another city. The team researches the heck out of the music and the product and is constantly getting great reviews from inside the industry. Regardless guys, this station is designed for women. The fact that men are actually engaged and listening is a nice bonus, but not the target. The music is better and more upbeat than years past, in my opinion. But, if it was programmed to men and lost some of it's female core, we'd all be on here claiming it's demise is certain as the numbers dropped. Gotta give them major props for their success. It's also strong enough that no bigger company has decided to invest in a war that will cost effort and piles of cash. Jacks cranking in the numbers, as well. It's like McDonalds...we may not like the food or even ever eat there (I haven't and don't), but we'd probably rather own a franchise than own our favorite small restaurant that we do love to visit. With that being said, what is it that you would change about Mix if you could?

Hey now!!! Hilarious suggestion, but it would give Mix a share of 101. What would Crums do? Never mind answering what they would do. I second your motion!!!

I'm kind of surprised at KDF's dominance in the country battle lately. To me, WSIX sounds a lot better. (slicker production, more personality, and less recurrents with the newest stuff first). To me, they just sound more on target with aiming for the more modern, younger, pop audience that country's moving toward. I'd be interested in the 18-34 breakdown. I'd be surprised if 'SIX didnt top KDF there.

Could it be that the more modern, younger, pop audience that WSIX wants so bad is off listening to their iPods?

Is there any chance for WSM AM in the market? Guess they are falling by the side simply due to the fact they are AM h owever the last time I listened to them they sounded "old".

New ratings out and a nice bump for WSIX to lead the country race. I posted last month that I was surprised KDF was ahead of them since 'SIX, to me, sounds much better produced. Looks like The Bobby Bones Show has given them a nice lead. With Bones in mornings, Amy Paige middays, and the Antman afternoons, they've got a really fun lineup, and I also like they're younger, CHR style presentation and new music focus. Glad to see them in the lead.

Other interesting information is that with this book, female-leaning Mix has tied The Zone for #1 25-54 men AND is still the #1 highest rated station in ALL PPM markets in the US. Amazing. Now the eighth straight book. In the most important (real) demo, Mix is #1 in all dayparts and #1 in all weekend parts. Also really interesting to look at the breakdown of QQK and The Beat. Combined they used to beat Mix, but didn't do that some of the demos. Also, it's time to start wonder what The Game is going to do. The momentum has gone in the opposite direction.

They seem to be going for quality rather than quantity is my take...going after the Americana folks, the NSAI/Bluebird folks who also attend the Opry and Ryman shows. I think they really know their brand and their audience, and they seem to be selling directly to a community rather than raw numbers.

They are in a tough situation, BigA. (Obviously). Interestingly enough, the grasp onto a nitch format that does have a tiny audience that isn't in a desired demographic according to the 2013 version of buyers, but yet they lost their potential to be relevant with the more "youthful" audience by letting Music City Roots go to non-country FMs and totally copy the original barn dances of country musics early days. And while I don't particularly get or enjoy Americana as a precise format, I do admit there is something seriously intriguing about blending history with current adaptations and breaking conventional playlist rules. WSM-AM should have been the place for that. The only thing scarier than Crumulus is Gaylord. They still think WSM-AM is worth a fortune (double to triple digits millions!) Anyone want to take a guess at what WSM-AM should really be worth?
