Ratings?

I'm surprised about the ratings for WQFM, they seemed to have dropped lower than they were when they started. WWRR has dropped a tad, by not by much, they are still in the Top 10.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, Shamrock made a mistake with the format change. That's not a flip remark, they obviously chose the wrong path.

It's funny that in one book, WWRR achieved a higher ratings story than WWDL did in it's almost 40 year history. People said it was a Clarks Summit fave, a Scranton station. A 3kw non upgradeable pea-shooter.
I guess with some innovative programming and interesting stationality, anything is possible. Even if the programming is not your cup of tea, ya gotta give them some credit for hutzpah, especially on their shoestring budget.

With a much wider playlist, oldies 92 could have had better numbers.Better than thay have now.

It's not the ratings. It's the billing. Some low rated stations manage to turn a tidy profit. On the surface, the Q looks like a train wreck, but you never know.

Suprised??? I expected to see something similar. I haven't been impressed with QFM since they launched.

Any thoughts?

It's no surprise to me, either. Although I tuned back in after a long time away and found that Barnes has improved somewhat---but he still talks too much and says his name 7or 8 times during each break. Lindsey Joy Samuels sounds just great---much better than when she was doing Metro Traffic. Shawn the afternoon guy is also quite good...he used to be the only one on that station I liked.
The problem to me is no consistency. When I was a PD that was my thing...the listener has to know exactly what they are going to hear when they tune in....you don't get that with QFM. In fact whenever I tune in I NEVER know what's going to be on. Will it be uptempo....will it be sleepy light rock...will it be a hockey game...who knows????? I think that's what's killing them. The female listeners especially....they probably tune out in droves when hockey comes on and don't tune back in until a couple days of listeneing to Magic93.
Although I've been to a few hockey games and the amount of female fans there never ceases to amaze me.

I am curious, Magic's been a powerhouse since the days of Jim Loftus and Mike Edwards, it was obvious by your comment that you don't agree. What would you do change it?

I'd start by expanding the playlist. You can nearly set your watch to the daily rotation, barring the lunch hour show.

I think Magic 93 sounds too much like the other stations on the dail anymore. And the jocks...especially the nighttime guy Gordan...the only word he knows is Awesome.. We have an awesom contest....we play awesome songs...I had an awesome weekend...I am so awesome...I counted once he said it 20 times in ten minutes (he also thinks he is funny...NOT) and ... to make matters worse....Fran and Stan are now on the awesome kick. Hey guys and gals...learn some new words...and really nobody really cares what you did on the weekend.

Well, it's obviously working for them---but I agree with what's been said. I worked for Susquehanna during the Loftus/Edwards regime and while I never cared for either one of them, they pretty much put that station on the map. Thing is, that was 13 years ago. Frankie's schtick is old and Fran is just plain hard to listen to. I kinda like to listen to Stan but you're right---Gordon needs to go out and find himself a personality somewhere. It DOES seem like they play the same song at the same time every day (My wife even noticed than and she LOOOOVVVEEEESS Magic93) and their new slogan should be "WE PLAY MORE ROD STEWART THAN ANY OTHER STATION." To us, it may seem like the whole thing needs an overhaul....but it's still working for them. I haven't seen the latest numbers, but last I looked they were doing pretty good.

Magic 93 is better than the number 1 in the market. Froggy 101 is just a cookie cutter country station.

I started listening to them online at night now because they just added my favorite song. Not many stations including my favorite "The Rose" is playing it yet. If you know the two stations well you can figure out which song I am talking about.

So Magic keep on going and whip the rest. The country crap will eventually die out, hopefully.

Didn't we go through this country phase back in the 80's....and then it faded out...and now it is back.
As for Fran on Magic...I think she is the only one that keeps things lively and she has a wonderful personality. Frankie's bit is getting old (but is he is a pro and never gets shaken on air).. Stan is okay...but sometimes puts me to sleep. and you are right....Gordon does need a personality...he is very much stuck on himself...it think he is going though a midlife crisis on air...and taking us along with him. ...just like Jumpin Jeff...must be something with the name.
I do like...Michael Mann...he has a great soothing voice. And I still love Gary Chrisman's voice...he is the best of the best in Williamsport and just about anywhere.

Magic isn't a personality driven station. If I like the song, I stay. If not, I'm gone. As long as the personalities don't get in the way, it's all good.

Maybe you should look at the books for the past 6 years before you rule a station out. That "country" station has been in the Top 3 stations in NEPA for about 7 years give or take. Could it be that people like it? Now that's a thought.

Magic has mainstream music and this book is doing $93 an hour, of course they will do well. But can you tell me that they are exciting or ground breaking?

Sometimes it seems in these forums people give opinions based on their own like and dislikes regarding formats. Good stations have to program to the masses, not one persons opinions. I'd rather have ratings than approval from a person that I don't even know in a forum. Perhaps a book or two is luck , but 7 years? Give credit where credit is due. Froggy 101, Magic, KRZ, and Rock are on top for a reason.

That is all.......

Ruth
