Just for the sake of discussion, any thoughts about the latest numbers for the Akron and Canton books? Big winners/losers? Surprises? Barring the use of specific Arbitron data, of course...

WHBC-AM was still #1 and hung out in their typical 8ish share arena, not too bad.

WQXK and WHBC tied for #2 which is good news for Nextmedia. Seams like Jerry is righting the ship slowly but surely. I really didn't think a AC/Hot AC hybrid would work, but it has so congrats to the team there.

WDJQ-FM congrats! Great job to John, Donnie and the gang! All superior female numbers in core demos and up/down the board, great job!

WHOF-FM no more Christmas Music. That seems to be the catalyst for the station and that means they should have a decent Fall book in that case. Good station but cookie-cutter.

WRQK-FM is pulling those male fancies and congrats to them on that. WDJQ is the female station and WRQK is the male station.

WQMX-FM is really an Akron station with a halloween mask on and so where they were is okay!

WHLO-AM and WKDD-FM tied #8. Once again, I think this is the halloween mask identity. When Barnstable owned those stations they understood that KDD was an Akron station, and it did well in other towns but always an Akron signal. CC is trying to squeeze orange juice out of lemons and its doing okay, but its gonna be hard to sell on store shelves. Maybe once everything is completely moved to Munroe Falls it will help?

WDPN really is the next station and for a little 250 watter AM it does really well! Its not even licensed to Canton!

Someone needs to launch a country station for Canton!

I love when people use 12+ numbers and act as an expert! Sorry, the beauty contest is no longer used by stations or buyers.

Couple of notes:

WHBC can't crow about their numbers, because nextmedia is no longer a subscriber to the Canton book. Only WDJQ/WDPN, WRQK, WHOF, WKDD, WHLO are listed as subscribers.

WHBC-AM was indeed #1 12+, make that 72+! When you look at money demos, they lost their butts again. Over two years, their audience has shrunk by close to 400%. They are getting beat in some dayparts/demos by talkers, WNIR/WHLO. Am drive was fine, Ponders show did okay. Miller and Sam in the pm, were just gawd awful. Looks like more people tuned to 1100 to hear the cavs in the playoffs than 1480. Even WTAM beat WHBC.

WHBC-FM rebounded nicely from the dark "Hunter Era", mornings still off from high middays. Not really sure why you describe Mix as a Hot AC/AC hybird, it's a good sounding hot AC. (for example I would consider WKDD an adult CHR. WHOF Gold based AC. WHBC, WHOF and WKDD don’t share the same currents, a few but not all. There are some distinct differences between all three)

WHOF-FM was flat share wise, but increased cume from fall. That's not something all Christmas stations are able to do. I would hardly call this station cookie cutter. I don't know too many stations playing Ebony Eyes and Faith Hill that work. The voicetracked midday shift was killed this book.

K105 - back up, still far off when they had a Canton presence.

WQMX is still the 2nd choice for country in Stark.

WDJQ - I'm not sure what you are congratulating them on; this is their 2nd down book in a row, which honestly, is puzzling. Persons 18-34 in Am drive, they got beat by syndication, (A show that normally targets older men from Indy) which had to hurt based on their “live and local” branding. AM drive has trended down for three books, down almost 5 shares from a year ago, again puzzling. Elvis gave Kiss their best Canton showing ever in mornings. Perhaps its an identity crisis? Several years of beating Q92 into the listeners, now diluted by adding in heritage call letters, which mean nothing to anybody under 35. The night show with Mo, faired pretty well.

WDPN - Pulls 12+ numbers and that's about it. No signal or marketing for the format, but still higher shares than say WCER, which is located right in the heart of Canton still showing a goose egg. Also nothing for WTIG or WINW or WLIB.

WNPQ – one of their best showings in years.

WRQK - Also now pulling their best numbers in years. AM drive, Middays and PM drive had HUGE gains. Nights were down.

WKDD – Down to flat. I get your point about Barnstable, but when they owned wkdd it was on 96.5, a signal that could be heard everywhere in the Akron metro, You lose WKDD now in Cuyahoga Falls, and Stow, it's very hard to listen too. Don't think this was by design when they moved to 98.1 to become regional, but more of the only way to survive. I wonder if anybody has considered how their new signal will flip their current situation. Great signal in Akron, Okay in Canton? I wonder if listeners in Louisville even know where Munroe falls is?

radiotooth -

I agree WHBC is all the old demo, but it is what it is! They are still #1 and yes, when you break out the demos it gets a little on the scary side. They were typically strong 25+ and I mean +++!

WHBC-FM well they did a pretty good job and as I said many times Jerry is a great PD so congrats out to him and his team. Yes mornings weren't as strong as mid-days, but WHBC has ruled mid-days with Kayleigh for years (note why she is still there).

K105 - Okay, I agree its not as good as their former glory days in Canton, but thats not their target in the first place. Canton is completely secondary to Youngstown for this station, and they are still going to get some very lucrative Canton dollars out of this book.

WQMX is still #2 and always will be. As I said, they are naturally a Akron station, so be it.

WDJQ - If I am looking at the same numbers you are, they were #1 18-34 which is their demo, how is that bad? They are #1 or #2 flip flop persons 18-34. Secondary #1 18-49 Women too! Mornings did get beat by Bob and Tom, but that was in Persons and BT had HUGE male numbers. However, WDJQ had the #1 local morning show in the market. WRQK had the #1 syndicated show in the market, who cares! When it comes to local advertisers, guess which ones they are going to buy? Mid-days on WDJQ she was #2 in the market!

WHOF was up in cume, yes I agree...but TSL was in the gutter my friend! How does that happen? Christmas Music is their game, and they play well in that arena!

WKDD i do agree, its signally impaired in most of Summit County. I really think thats why Clear Channel originally tried to play with WQKT in Wooster. If Dix would have sold, WKDD would be at 104.5 Doylestown/Akron. The plan was to then move 107.7 into Shreve where it would cover 95% of Wayne County.

Barnstable did run that ship well and Keith is doing a pretty damn good job with what CC has given him. I personally will always treat KDD has the heritage station that it is... I think Keith is a great programmer.

WRQK was up with men all over the place but erroded with women, thats why WDJQ had a struggle with it's "Persons Numbers" because of WRQK and their male demos. This was also a very heavy MALE book! Look at the samples.

The fact that WHBC is no longer an Arbitron subscriber is significant..it means NextMedia is doing a first class job of handcuffing their salespeople..can you get numbers? Sure..I've seen it done..but dealing with agencies is going to be a real bitch..even if "Kayleigh Kriss" pulled her usual numbers..what's the point if you don't have them to sell?

Radiotooth, WHBC has been getting beat by WHLO for years..it was happening when they were still a full service station playing music in their dayparts..AM Drive will be fine as long as Fred is there..what will come after that is anybody's guess..

NextMedia is going to regret the day they cut Jim Albright loose..what a stupid, shortsighted move by a company founded and run by some of radio's stupidest people..this is NOT a knock on Sam, who was thrown into an impossible situation..replacing a local legend is never easy..

Jesus Christ what does it tell you when WTAM is beating them with the Cavaliers..strange days indeed..
