....RATINGS

In addition, let’s not forget how PD Kris also screwed up KMLE. One year ago it was the #1 25-54 station in the market. Now KMLE is #14. How does this guy keep his job? Low pay must make him incredibly attractive.

Hey, Earth to poster.... you can't compare the numbers from a year ago except on rating, not share.... and even then, the comparison between two different ratings methodologies is inappropriate.

Still, KOOL was 16th in 25-54 last fall...

And KMLE was 15th in the same book...

Diary =/= PPM.

Eduardo,

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses. Diary ratings vs. PPM do not have a margin of error of 14 places in the ratings. KMLE demolished a top radio station. By fall, their afternoon show and morning show were slowly being fired and dismantled. Their last full ratings report showed them #1. Any more excuses for PD Kris? What is your excuse for PD Kris and KOOL’s Christmas Music beginning last Halloween?

Mr. Eduardo made a good point about methodology, but your reply included an unsubstantiated claim about margin of error and a continued personal attack on Kris Abrams.

Perhaps you should get back on point. Allow me:

Dave Pratt is the best. Dave Pratt is the savior of country. Dave Pratt is the savior of talk radio. Dave Pratt!

I said nothing about Dave Pratt, but fact is fact. A change in methodology doesn’t all of a sudden resonate in KMLE losing in nearly every demo to KNIX or dropping to #14. Kris, for good reason, you sound a bit defensive. I am sure Pratt and Stu are fine without KMLE, but KMLE obviously is not fine without them. As for KOOL, anybody can voice track or play the same 50 songs over and over and over with no direct competition. KOOL is a given. Your true worth as a PD is reflected by the obvious fall of KMLE. You were left exposed when your major talent wasn’t there to pull you up by the back of your pants.

Inside:

Your powers of reasoning are impressive. I point out a personal attack, so therefore I must be the victim of that attack. Well done. ::)

Unfortunately I am not Kris Abrams, and I don't cash his checks. But I feel safe to say that if he could afford to keep his staff, he would have in a heartbeat. Just like any of the PD's in this town - or across the country - Mr. Abrams would have happily kept most if not all of his staff.

I am sympathetic, in some ways, to your vitriol, but it is directed at the wrong people.

Oops - double post. What is going on with this board??? SQL errors left & right...

There were two different opinions given for the demise of KOOL/KMLE:

1. PD selecting the wrong music (specifically the 'Kris'mas stuff on KOOL).
2. The scattering of on-air talent on both stations.

Although both decisions could have been made at management levels above Kris (and the staff decision most surely was) he is still the guy in the hot seat for the 'Kris'mas bungle. But if not then Kris please accept my sincere apologies. The demise of my long-beloved favorite station is simply very hard to take. I doubt we shall see them ever again. :(

Well Tuna, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the 2nd decision was probably not up to the PD in question. I don't know Kris Abrams, but in my *mumble mumble* years in the business I've known very few PDs who would fire that many talented, experienced on-air talents in such a short time without a corporate gun to their head. Getting rid of both the morning and afternoon shows of two well-performing stations is a major programming decision, and these days major programming decisions are not made locally.

As for the ratings performance of the remaining staff, I'm wondering if, somewhere in the back of their minds, the former diary-keepers and now PPM holders can somehow sense that those people on the air have had their morale destroyed by endless Corporate Bull S**t, and the numbers reflect that fact. At least that's my pet theory.

As for the Christmas music thing, I'm inclined to believe that one was dreamed up at a corporate level. I mean, these are the same geniuses who gave us "FREE-FM," fer cryin' out loud. Only such brilliant programming minds could hatch a plan to essentially take one of the best oldies stations in the country, change it's format for over two months, and think nothing bad would happen.

We're inclined to agree on all points. The Nurse and I seriously doubt any other Valley station will attempt to pre-empt KEZ for the Christmas Crown this year. And if we're lucky, 99~Nine will launch it the day AFTER Thanksgiving. Please give us the bird in peace!

Demise? Both are off the air?

From the rankers all over the Internet, it looks like KOOL is doing better than in the diary survey, and much better in 25-54.

KMLE is off, but definitely alive and certainly capable of rebounding like even the best stations do.

It looks like the Christmas thing resulted in something positive.

Uh.....no. Poor choice of words. 'Decline' would have worked better.

KOOL still has a good sound but it doesn't have the 'character' that made it once great. Compared with the other music offerings in the Valley I'm not surprised it has good numbers but how does it compare with any period before the downsizing began?

I haven't listened to Camel Country in 15 years or so but, like KOOL, they once had great character too. I'm assuming those guys are all gone now too.

I think you stated that last year but I've never heard anyone, on this board or in life, say they liked the 'Kris'mas thingie or listened to it. I turned KOOL off October 31, 2008 and have played it maybe a total of 15 minutes since (and only in my car when commercials come on KSLX).

KOOL PD Kris-mas better hang on to what he has. Tom and Maria are the best thing that has happened to KOOL mornings in a long time. Are these two under contract? Could they leave for greener ($$$$) pastures? Maria is friends with a friend of mine...she is not getting paid what she is worth. She would sound great on KEZ.

Tough comparison to make, Tunatierra. Before the axe fell on great talent, KOOL-FM was playing a lot of Sixties songs and had a real Oldies sound to it. Even with Bill Gardner in AMD and Camelback Jack doing the drive home, their numbers were on a free fall. Now they've cut back signficantly on the Sixties, zeroed in on the Seventies and early Eighties and have seen 25-54 numbers soar. See BS came to the realization that the right music drove ratings for KOOL. The bad economy provided the reason to jettison costly local talent. Everything seems to be working for them now. The talented Buckeye Media Hut professor KOOL Listener Lauren has a class on the 94~Five blood bath as well as the ever popular course: How To Screw Up A Great Station By Playing Too Much Christmas Music Too Early. Nurse Jeff and I are offering a free autographed photo of NFVG to the 1001st student to enroll!

So Doc, are you saying it mox nix what airstaff is hosting the music as long as the music fits the demo?

Seems crazy to me that anyone who was listening to KOOL before the rape & pillage would be happy that the major jocks were trashed along with the 60's. Nothing against Goddard or Tom and Maria but I really miss BG, CJ, John Michaels (or whatever his Hispanic alter ego was/is), Sherwood and the AM traffic guy/board op/gofer.

I have the music on my MP3 player but can't get the jocks in there. <very sad face>

Getting away from the mortal 60's music and sound and image was key to KOOL putting the brakes on the erosion in the sales demo caused by the bulk of the audience "going geezer" on them. Kris did it, and quite successfully. KOOL is 4th 25-54!

Let's see... it's really awful to be 4th in 25-49 women and 5th in 25-54 women. Got it.

Any more excuses for PD Kris? What is your excuse for PD Kris and KOOL’s Christmas Music beginning last Halloween?

Gee, KOOL is 4th 25-54, and Kris has done a superb job in flusing the "geezers" and getting the sales demos back. No excuses; I'm a fan of a good job anywhere! And it was all done in the midst of tight cutbacks and cost controls.

Eduardo,

So you can give PD Kris credit for KOOL’s success with PPM but you can’t blame PD Kris on KMLE’s failure? Which is it? Maybe you should go by “David” and “Eduardo” separately to represent both of your faces.

Outside of AMD, that's usually the case. Sorry to be the one to break the bad news. Just keep away from Nurse Jeff and his trash talk about Santa Claus!
