PPM is on the way but the market still has to contend with the diaries for awhile yet. As far as I can tell the numbers that came out Friday held few surprises however, there were some moves up and down. Seems Christmas music was not as important to the market as it had been in the past however WLYT seems to have won the Christmas battle.

I just started a thread on the Raleigh/GSO board about PPM. I'm wondering if the big groups will foot the bill for it. I hear it's 60% or more higher than the diary surveys. In this economy, will they spend the money? If they do, advertising rates are going to have to reflect the increase and I can't see that happening right now. Sure the technology has to be better than the diary system (God Knows!), but it's a cost issue. Does anyone know if the big groups in Charlotte or Raleigh are going to pay for it? Comments?

KISS 951 in 8th place?? Where would they be without Ace & TJ?

Will they really have any choice? If anybody pays for it and uses the ratings, seems like everybody will have to participate unless their ratings are better with the diary system.

That's the point. There will no longer be a diary system once PPM goes into effect in a market. It might open the door for alternate rating sources, like Nielson, if they choose to compete. I personally think it would be good for radio for Arbitron to have a viable competitor. They've kind of been a Monopoly since they caused the demise of Birch back in the 80's. And, Birch's telephone methodology was actually superior, although phone surveys are very difficult and expensive in this day and time.
