Rays playoff games

I was thinking a station with a better signal than 1250 should simulcast the Rays playoff games since they are the only local voice of the team we can hear. Are there any plans to do this for the next series?

And could this season's success get them on a better station next year?

For the season - never. Each game is so meaningless. In football, each game is 7% of your season. In baseball each is 0.7%.

As I've said elsewhere, Clear Channel should stick em on 98 Rock at least the rest of the way through the playoffs. However, if you can't hear 1250 (not sure why if you live in the metro area) check out either 1040 or 1470. They are running the national ESPN Radio broadcast. I agree with Parttimer about regular season games on FM... you've got to give up practically every night from April through September for those broadcasts... And that'll never happen in this town.

As expected, the cable TV ratings for the ALDS, Rays vs. White Sox, were incredible. They got better every game. Monday's Game 4, a 5P start at that, landed a 13.4 for Bright House. With that said, Clear Channel should definitely put the ALCS, Rays vs. Red Sox, on an FM station like 98 Rock. There is no question a male demo station like 98 Rock would pick up lots of new traffic. Even though most of these listeners would be temporarily tuning in for the games, 97.9 would find a lot of presets over the next week or so, and maybe win over some people for the future. This would be a great move for them, especially considering Games 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 are 8P or 8:30P starts. Only next Monday's Game 3 and next Saturday's Game 6 are 4:30P start times.

Why do you say this? WSB carried the Braves for most of the time they have been in Atlanta, WLW has carried the Reds since forever, and KMOX carried the Cards since 1953, and still would today had not the Cards put them on their own station, which brings to mind WGN....

All of those blowtorches can't be just writing off their nighttime business for civic duty.

Game 4 -Rays/Red Sox: 970 WFLA will broadcast... does that do it for ya'll. The power player has got game!
At 25k, WFLA only has half the power of rival 820's 50kw daytime signal.

yeah, but isn't it a NIGHT game tonight ??

Still having the clarity of FM would be nice... although I have XM...

later...

It IS a night game, which means WWBA's killer 50 watt signal on powerdial 820 will sound like a fart in the wind.
Spoken like a CC-insider who obviously has a vested interest in how other stations do in this market.
Glad you're so pro-radio here.

The colorful expression reflects the poster's disdain for any other broadcasting.

Glad you're so pro-raido here.

Don, the way you display your unabashed hatred for all things 4002 W. Gandy Blvd., I wouldn't call you pro-radio either...every station here has its good and bad points about them, and its always been that way.

Naughtytalker is factually correct, 820's signal will drop from the 50kw level down to a scant 1100 watts just as tonight's pregame starts [cheapplug] 7 pm pregame, 8:07 first pitch on 1250 WHNZ and 970 WFLA [/cheapplug], most of which will head down the bay and into the Gulf of Mexico. According to the radio-locator map, the signal can't even cover all of Pinellas County. Doesn't make for the best place to put an ALCS Game.

Let's face it...nighttime signals in this area aren't the best...even HNZ can't quite get all of Pinellas County strong. Lord knows my friends up in Tarpon and up into southern Pasco are stuck with fuzzy, if any signal once the sun goes down...so getting 970 to simulcast is a great move.

Hope everyone enjoys the game tonight...GO RAYS!!

As I have mentioned before, when I lived in Palm Harbor, I would get WBAP in Dallas over the Largo signal at night.
Unfortunately for WWBA 820, their night time signal and pattern isn't too great.

I didn't even have to go as far north as Palm Harbor to lose the 820 signal last week. In the Clearwater High School area (Hercules and Gulf to Bay )and points west toward downtown, WBAP and a Cuban station were overriding 820; I then went on Alt 19 (Ft Harrison) to downtown Dunedin and it was the same story there.

At night the 820 signal is even worse than the 1040 signal for the above mentioned areas. Unless 820 can get some type of power increase and/or fine tune their directional pattern, they will never get decent ratings after sunset, regardless of their programming.

Regardless of what one thinks of ClearChannel, they did cherry pick the best overall signals and pretty well serve all of Hillsborough and Pinellas counties at night. (at least 620 and 970). Pasco county(depending on the part of the county) and Hernando county is left in the dark after sunset. (bad pun intended)

You guys have lost the original point of this topic... justifying a simulcast between 2 Clear Channel AMs and instead of putting the Rays games on FM. 820 is not and would not be broadcasting Rays games anyway so the signal comparisons are mute. Besides, when the Devil Rays came to be in '98, 820 was still WZTM (The Team) and had ZERO chance in scoring the rights due to the weak nighttime signal. I remember vividly that Namoli wanted the games on the #1 AM in the market which was WFLA.

And speaking of the choosing of flagship stations... The Lightning learned the hard way when the games were only on 910. When they moved to the Dome, 910 was barely audible at night in Pinellas. Eventually, when the team made it's first run through the playoffs, the games were simulcasted on 620 WSUN and or I believe Coast 107.3. So it's been done before.

My main point here is AM stations are VERY hard to receive clearly (I don't care what frequency or the wattage is) when you've got plasma TV's, halogen lamps, and other interfering power equipment in your home. I for one would have loved to listen to our radio team while watching the series with the White Sox. However, when my home theater system is powered up, my AM reception goes down. You make a good point about XM... however the delay makes matching up with the video more difficult.

Speaking of colorful expressions, isn't Don62 the same guy who constantly refers to "CrapChannel" and "naughtycrap" in his messages?

Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, meet pot.

Just sayin' ... I don't have a dog in this fight.

Yes, and naughty is always going after WWBA and soundling like FLA is the best thing since sliced bread.

Talk about someone with a vested interest in making sure no one else succeeds.

Don't anyone tell you CC or its apologists are above criticism.

Re: all this talk about radio

I know this is a radio discussion, but just wait till next year when you will be lucky to see maybe 20 games on broadcast TV now that the Rays have done so good this year ;D.
