Had a chance to listen to the Rays game on the radio last night. There is something very special about baseball on radio. Freed and Wills are really good and a pleasure to listen to.

couldn't agree more. now if only they would do something about rich herrera. while i know he's paid by the team his lack of objectivity is a bit much. mick hubert thinks he's too much of a homer.
That's what is so impressive about Freed and Wills. They are objective and say things that fans are thinking without bashing.

Just to ad....along with Freed and Wills doing a great job, the production is slick and very well done. The "bumper" music is excellent. Excellent job all aorund.

At the risk of off-topic skew, Andy and Dave are NOT objective. You are comparing them to John and Susan who Definatly are not! As far as the Yankees are concerned, there is a place for them and that is in first. That was established by the mentality of excellence demanded by George S. and family, it concert with the Number 1 Market and the traditions of baseball. Dave and Andy are still blaming the loss on Thursday on Ring "A" and the Dome. Even though the Rays didn't score in the first 7 innings of the game AND in the middle of a 4 game losing streak!
Rich Herrera is more objective. In defense of Andy & Dave, they are calling the game, Rich has the time to explain his thought patterns better without he "distraction" of the game.
Now, for the ratings for radio vs. TV vs attendance...

Baseball is being covered by people who either, don't like the game, or, worse, are trying to kill it with their bad mouthing it.Parttimer said:
Here in Florida, we have 2 teams. They might as well be in different states because we, under the Tampa umbrella, have nothing in common with Miami. The Marlins have 25% of the state's population and they draw fewer attendance than the Rays do in St. Pete. Marlins play outside. Nobody wants to play under the sun in Florida in the summer. I also don't want this to get into the off-topic, but I just want to make a clarification. Rich Herrera said in the postgame show (and in broadcasts since) that the ball hitting the catwalk DID cost the Rays that game. And he's right. Yes the team hadn't hit to that point, but they were tied, and that popup doesn't hit the catwalk the team is out of the inning (remember there were 2 outs).
As for John and Suzyn and the Yankees...it's all about the $$$. Another 40 million in payroll to try and stave off the Rays. Gonna make for a fun couple of months. ;D

That said, I wish he would realize that as fans of the Rays, we feel there's some room to discuss issues involving the team, when warrented. Herrera was basically shouting down caller after caller following today's game who wanted to talk about the short comings of our new hitting coach Derek Shelton. After nearly being no-hit again today in Toronto, Shelton's performace, or lack of it, is certainly fair game -- but Herrera didn't want to hear about it.
I recall earlier this year when Navarro was slumping at the plate and behind it, John Jaso was becoming a fan favorite, due to his hustle and hot bat. Herrera would constantly note that Jaso would be going back to the minors as soon as Kelly Shoppach came off the D.L. and wouldn't even entertain the notion that it would be Navarro going back to Durham, instead. And of course, that's exactly what happened.
The point here; Herrera seems to want his listeners to think that every move the Rays make is the right one and not something to be questioned. Which, of course, is absurd.

Getting a little off topic, however, having been to umpteen hockey and baseball games at the Trop have to agree with Jeff. It ain't a bad place to watch baseball. Location ain't so bad. If it was so bad and too far away then how come 37,000 a night for 3 nights came to see the Yankees. How come (only using half the building) 20 thousand plus came to see hockey. Would a trendy downtown ballpark be great...of course it would. Just one visit to Camden Yards will make you green with envy, however, this is major league baseball and our team is very good. Sure would be a help if there were express buss service or a park and ride option from all over the Bay area. This ownership is top notch. They have made the Trop as good as it can be and have given us a quality product on the field.
