Razz Retires From WXTU

Beasley obviously is saving money here, but what does Damico know about country music, and is familiarity with country music essential for a country PD? Could someone with a background in rock formats just apply the same format guidelines he implemented at his rock stations to his new country station and leave the musical specifics to a format captain at corporate HQ?

Interesting question. Damico replaces Razz who had no background in country radio either:

He also spent six years in Philadelphia hosting afternoons at now-sister Rock 93.3 WMMR from 2000 to 2006 preceded by time at mostly Rock stations across the country including WBZZ Pittsburgh, WAAF Boston, and WAXQ and WXRK New York.

It didn't seem to hurt Razz, who enjoyed a 20 year career at WXTU. I often say most radio people aren't musicologists. They may like music, and music may be part of their job, but their focus isn't the music. It's the stuff around the music. Some people in radio think they're in the music business. They're not. They're in the radio business. Those who really want to be in the music business often leave radio to work for record labels.
