RCA TV - Audio problem

Strange situation...I was watching TV last nite, and all of a sudden, all of my audio went to static, on every channel, and the video was fine.....It worked fine when I play a DVD through the line level jacks....I figured my digital cable box went sour, so I swapped it out at comcast today......New box does the same thing...So I plugged the cable directly to the TV, and the same damn thing, video is fine, audio is static, on every channel...so now i have the line level out from the cable box into the line level in on the TV, and that works fine...

Is it possible that the TV's RF unit could have the audio side damaged??

Probably not in the tuner or early IF stages. TV audio is extracted after the video detector. The difference between the video and audio carriers is 4.5 MHz. After the detector, the 4.5 MHz. signal is extracted, filtered, amplified and run through the audio discriminator. Something has gone wrong with the audio IF/discriminator circuit. This probably has no practical significance but if you are curious this is my analysis.

Whats even stranger is that I have the same exact problem. My RCA TV first did this on New Years Eve. Its like a low white noise. Matt, Try unplugging the TV from the electric outlet for a few minutes and plugging it back in and see if that doesn't fix it. I know you have it working the other way right now, but humor me here. I am really curious about this. How old is your TV set? Mine is a few years, like in the 4-6 year range.

That's exactly what it sounds like - a low white noise. And I'll humor you...I unplugged it for 5 seconds and plugged it back in. And the audio is now BACK! Figures, the one thing I didn't try. Mine is about 6 years old, 32".

Thompson Consumer strikes again.

I had a Radio's Crappiest Apparatus TV set about 7 years ago. After 6 months, the picture started to "sink" towards the bottom. Sent it back for warranty repair, they sent a voucher for a new set. Said there were major defaults with power supply from SN XXXXX3 to SN XXXXX144 etc. Wasn't a large number (only about 200 were affected, of course mine was in that grouping).

The second set lasted longer (4 years), but that too is now gone.

I do have an el-cheapo 1989 Goldstar that still works, so there is no accounting for taste.
Edited by 1290wgli on 01/25/06 06:18 PM.

32"....I think I bought it in around '99 or so. The picture quality is fine. I'll just keep watching the cable box through the line level jacks....I couldn't imagine what it would cost to fix, nor would I want to spend any money on it...
______________

I had a 13 inch TV I do not remember the model number but the buttons were in the middle on the top side of the case and had a headphone jack I had wanted that TV for like a year and when I had gotten it, I had it about 6 months and the piece of S**T gave up every time I would try to turn it on it would go on for like a second and than shut its self off. If you ask me save your money and not buying RCA.
______________
