I'm using Rivendell extensively at several stations, and would be happy to be of help if you run into trouble.

How has it worked out for you? Did you roll your own or buy one prebuilt?

I've rarely had the opportunity to talk to someone that actually used it. A very interesting project. I enjoyed reading it's manual.

How would you compare it with the other big systems (AudioVAULT, Prophet, Wide Orbit)?

I have been running it for three years. Five workstations and two servers. One workstation is not connected to the network. It lives in a production trailer. It is updated with a portable hard drive when needed.

Works great. Have had very few issues. In our case we paid Paravel Systems to build the workstations and do the install. We chose Rivendell because the developer, Fred Gleason, had done much of the legwork to make it interface with CounterPoint traffic and Cumulus Media's X-Digital system for playing regional commercials.

If you have a 64bit machine laying around with an ALSA compatible sound card you can roll your own using the Broadcast Appliance.

The Appliance will install erase the hard drive and install CentOS so be careful.

Thank you... I'll drop it on an SSD and play with it. I am somewhat of a hobbyist with automation systems. I pay for/use AudioVAULT, but I love to experiment with others.

I had someone I did contract IT for that I upgraded and ran Simian for. I've also done a good deal with Maestro (more than I wanted to).

I really appreciate the link to the live boot/installer...

A few questions about Rivendell...

Does it allow:

- Create playlists automatically?
- Create commercial breaks and set their airtimes?
- Creat a cart/ebent that ends @HH:00:00
- Create cart/event that starts @HH:00:01?

IF yes, I'll dig onto it... and yes, I've managed to install AND listen to it. Created some manual playlists (logs), put them manually on the Airplay. module...

I've worked with Rivendell and can say its features stack up with many of the commercial automation system. For those with a Unix/Linux background - Rivendell also gives a powerful macro language and scripting interface.

To answer your questions below:
1. Rivendell can create playlist automatically. Its music scheduler does have some issues with weighting, although you can interface with commercial packages very easily. As for complex playlists including music, traffic, and general clock events - Rivendell can do this in an automated manner very nicely.

2. Rivendell can create commercial breaks and set their airtimes. These can be hard breaks, or floating breaks (when using satellite or local programming). The key to Rivendell breaks is the Clock. Clocks call events which can be set to import from logs, execute macros, os well as wrap imports with pre-play and post-play carts.

3. Rivendell can create events (containing carts) that execute at specific times. These can be triggered by a clock, or triggered externally through relay closures.

Overall, it's a solid automation system. I recommend that you stick with the recommended hardware and linux versions. The appliance is a great idea in that much of the configuration is already done.

There is also a mailing list on the Rivendell site that is quite active. I highly recommend joining it if you seriously look at using the system.

Here is a good place to start:

Thaaaaank you Brian! I'm just using Rivendell @home as a newbie Linux user (not so noob but almost)
I'm facing it as a challenge to me. I've played with other low-cost stuff but I'm finding this quite interesting. Your answer increased the interest a lot...
A quickie: can the colors be change? The white is... too bright ;D
Thanks!
