RDS advertisements

For a long time, WENZ and, presumably WZAK, have advertisements along with, or instead of song information and station name, that can be seen in vehicles. Today, I noticed that WAKS had an advertisement for an Avon Lake motor vehicle business that rotated with station information. How much money do these ads rake in for the station/company? I, myself, can't really consume or remember much from these as my main attention is, logically, elsewhere. In fact, after leaving the car, and doing some other chores, as I write this, I'm no 100% sure it was an Avon Lake business, although I'm pretty sure. I listed "motor vehicle" instead of "car" because I don't really remember any details, as short as they may be.

Wasn't the original intent of RDS to be station call letters, Song idents, etc Heard many a song that I would have had loved to have seen title/band name scroll across, but noooooooo, I have to see an ad for Blowhole Mattresses & Bail Bonds with a 17 digit phone number that will have me crashing into a phone pole before I have half the numbers dialed......mainly to yell at them that I would never buy their crap!

The RDS PS (the 8 character ID) was meant to be for the station ID or call letters. There's a separate RadioText section for scrolling song info, slogans, ads etc. The PS was never meant to be used in the way it gets used now.

I still have an older "scrolling" RDS display so often times it will just get itself into a mix of letters from the full text

I see NO station ID call letters, etc. All I see is a repeating scrolling ad and that's it. You'd think the FCC would make them do RDS top of the hour ID stuff on it at least. And when scrolling around this evening saw "Wanna advertise on this display? Call John at 1-800-XXX-XXXX ext. ABCD"

Yes, I know. And even then I've noticed sometime that's it not even close to top of the hour ...
It does not have to be at the top of the hour. Just a convenient break in the flow of programming.

§ 73.1201 Station identification
(a) When regularly required. Broadcast station identification announcements shall be made:
(1) At the beginning and ending of each time of operation, and
(2) Hourly, as close to the hour as feasible, at a natural break in program offerings. Television and Class A televison and Class A televison broadcast stations may make these announcements visually or aurally.

I've heard them done 5-10-12 minutes before the hour and after. That to me is NOT as close to the hour as feasible unless they're playing the album length version of Funeral or A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, especially when they're having short songs, ad breaks, etc. AFTER they've given the ID. It may be a problem with their automation also but who knows? Seems the only time it's done near or at the top of the hour is if they're doing a live sports broadcast when they break for station ID. About the only time, on one station at least, when it was done at the top of the hour [and you knew it was coming] was when they played an instrumental and cut it short to give the ID and right into the news. But they have a new PD so the instrumentals are gone.
