RDS Display Issue on new car radio

OK guys and gals, I need some help here…

My father just got a brand new Corvette in February. The Vette came with an RDS compatible receiver. When he tunes to the station I work for, KEOM, he sees the RDS data we’re transmitting. He first sees KEOM FM, and then the song information. But if he tunes to any other station and then comes back to KEOM, his radio incorrectly shows the call letters as KENL, and the FM part is missing. This happens every time he tunes away and then comes back to KEOM, even when he’s just four or five miles away from the station's tower. I have been unable to duplicate this on my own RDS tuner, yet my father seems to think this problem is the result of someone mistyping during the setup of the system.

Have any of you heard of a problem like this?

Thanks in advance,

R

Hmm. Is KEOM a preset? Some radios will remember the PS and apply it to the preset, so that even in weak signal conditions you'll see a text label. Do whatever you do to get the "KEOM FM" back on the display, and while it's still there, re-set the preset and see if that fixes it.

It sounds like he saved the preset while "KENL" was on the display (likely an error in decoding). Or, there's a station on a preset somewhere else in memory called KENL that's on that same frequency, and it's overriding the correct info? Just a thought.

I had this issue with a Kenwood radio. One preset was for "Magic 96" on 96.5. I was out in the boonies somewhere and a station 96.5 had RDS but was too weak to be decoded. It said Magic 96 until the corrected data appeared. I had once saved a preset for a station called "THE BULL" during a song/title scroll and every time I'd select that preset it'd show for a few seconds "ntry-She" or some such nonsense!

Re: RDS Display Issue on new car radio - Another question

Hi,

Another RDS question.

My radio only shows RDS if I push the "text' button. it shows the text and then goes back to to the frequency display. I thought RDS was supposed to be on full time for the station if RDS was transmitted. Is this possibly an issue with the radio?

That's a reciever issue. A lot of GM/Delco receivers will show the text for a very short period and then go back to the Frequency or PS display.
