RDS monitor/receiver

Can anyone recommend an RDS monitor or reciever? I see Denon makes one, and Belar a monitor, but I was thinking of getting a consumer grade car radio (my 2001 Mitsubishi SUV doesn't have RDS) and running it with a 12V supply; portable for field use and maybe putting it in a nice cabinet for remotes, etc. I see ebay has alot, but most are European. Will they work in the states? I found there was something called a Conrad RDS adapter available at one time, where you could tap into the bb of most recievers but naturally it's discontinued. And Sangean/Radio Shack had their 909, but it only displayed the PTY I think.

I'd go with the Denon receiver. The tuner is also very sensitive and very excellent. You can take it with you into the field just the same as anything else. I use one with our stations, and I take it with me to the transmitter sites when I have to program the RDS units.

If you actually want an analyzer, the MicroGen TS9000 is a really cool little box. Plug it into a USB port and use the included software to monitor every aspect of the signal. The Belars are great if you want a serious reference standard set of test gear. The MicroGen is better if you want something really easy to use and fun to play around with.

Make sure whatever you get will show you both PS and RadioText. Many car radios don't support RadioText. The Denon receiver will do both.

I have a RatShack DX398 (same as Sangean ATS-909). The tuner works well, but the RDS decoder requires a significant level of signal to decode. It's also very limited in that it shows only the PS, and only in uppercase lettering.

For RDS, I'm a lot happier with the Blaupunkt RDM168 / Alaska-II in my car. Although it also only does uppercase, it can show the PTY, and can follow a logical station from frequency to frequency if the station implements the AF feature.

There is a software decoder out there called Esslinger (sp?). If it was easier to tap the data from the SAA6579T RDS chip, you could feed the Esslinger decoder from that data stream. I haven't worked up the nerve to hack away at the RFI shield over that part of the board yet!

I'd go for the Denon as well. We use them here for air monitors, both AM & FM. They work great. For the truck, I use my Blaupunkt Casablanca CD52, from Crutchfield. They have good pricing, and will set you up with whatever you would need to install one in any vehicle. Never let me down, never dissapointed, love the blaupunkt... but that's just me..

When all is said in done with Salem/Sacto, will 103.9 have artist - title info on the RDS?

I have a Denon TU-380RD that I bought off of eBay for something like $40.
In mint condition and it works amazingly well.

It sometimes gets RDS without much signal which is a nice change from the DX398, which needs the correct signal level to even decode RDS.
