RDS over barix stream?

Hello all!

Is there a way to run an rds with sond titles via a barix "stl"? We use the barix extreamer and instreamer to send the audio to the transmitter.

Short answer. "NO". The RDS is a subcarrier and needs the same path your composite out of the processor would use. I don't think there's a pass thru serial path in the barix so even that would not work. Now, if you have internet at your transmitter and an RDS generator that takes an Ethernet connection, you can send your song/title information via the internet to the encoder.

Thanks for the tip.

Read page 38 in your Inovonics manual on RDS features it offers. You will need a RDS encoder.

Yeah im looking to get an encoder but wanted to send song titles as well. The issue is that we use internet stl and need to find a way of sending the song titles to the transmitter site where the rds encoder will need to be.

I presume the processor is at the xmtr. Not sure, but i think you can come off the serial on the Barix decoder into the rds encoder and into the david IV..Maybe stephen, the statewide RDS specialist will chime in here.Lots of barix users are doing rds with these units.

what Lazy J said.. STL firmware will act as serial gateway, however, if I had a choice, I would get an encoder with ethernet and send updates that way. Also depends on your automation and what capabilities it has to send titles to encoder.

That didn't make sense to me for a second, I see now, david iv has input for 57khz subcarrier, will accept varying levels of input and maintain up to 5% injection. In that case an external encoder is still needed.

I've heard the inovonics RDS units are quite nice. I have not personally used one. I have used the (really cheap) pira.cz kit that is great for what it is as well as audemat fmb80. Either of those are great units, the audemat being much more flexible in what it can do and how it does it. the pira.cz kit is rs232 only, I added a ethernet to rs232 adapter to send updates to it directly over ip. If you have the capability of your automation spitting out rs232 then you can send that data over barix no problem.

I agree with Stephen on this. If you have a network at the transmitter, the best way is to locate the encoder at that plant and make a route from your studio to the tx site and send this data over a TCP port. This works will all modern RDS encoders and I can't think of any automation that can't do TCP/IP output of now playing data (any good one at least).
