RDS Programming

We just purchased an Inovonics 702 for the high school station I run. It's the best we could justify ($$). Here is the link:

Anyway it says that "it is not capable of ‘dynamic’ messaging with song titles, etc., the 702 will identify your station by format, display your station’s "street name," and continuously transmit any station promo or advertising message to your listeners."

What should I put on there other than our street name & format? We obviously don't have ads (non-comm), but we do community broadcasting such as football games...should we promo that?

Anyone else have this piece of equipment, and if so, how much can you, or do you, use it?

If you guys take requests, the phone number might be something good to put...or web address if you have a website.

During severe weather, we post county warning info on ours or a generic weather message.
 
That's a great idea. I think I will post our web address on it. Being a high school station, we don't really take requests too often and we're not usually in a position to put weather info immediately on the air. I will put on delay and closing messages though.

This is the next big thing to hit your building. I consult a top 40 in Seattle that sells the messaging during when spots are playing on the frequency. Commercial FM's will begin to see that this is a way to make money during a tough money making period for our industry.

It is also a great way to promote you station, morning show, benchmarks, etc.

But remember - YOUR station should be front and center. Do not let it become too crowded with messaging and client hits.

It can also be a distraction to your listeners who may be in traffic and need to focus on something other than a 20 for the price of 10 wing offer your station's remote food trade partner wants to see scrolling.
 
Here's a gray area....a high school non-comm selling ad time on RDS? hmm....we havn't, but we do have the idea...

Oh you THINK? Like there aren't enough distractions already with cell phones and texting while driving?

I've seen those "scrolling ads" - and if I were a client I'd get them thrown in for free. No way would I pay a cent for that.

Agreed. There are so few RDS radios out there that they are a hard sell. People have been trying to sell those for a while and they've never caught on in any market, probably because even most clients would have no way of seeing their ad. RDS is better suited to general station identification and other useful information as a supplement to what you're already doing on the air.

RDS is cool but too many people bought into the hype that it was reinventing the wheel. It's the same thing we're seeing now with the backlash against HD Radio.
 
My car is 3 years old and has a pretty good radio, but it doesn't support RDS.
 
Funny how RDS never really caught on over in the US (I'm in the UK). It's fairly "big" here: for the past 15 years or so, most new cars have had RDS built into the radio and many of the larger home hi-fi systems have it, too. I wouldn't say that it's used for selling (although many of the pirate stations in London use scrolling PS to advertise dance raves and what-not!).

Most people in the UK would use RDS to keep up-to-date on travel news by enabling the "TP" button (which watches for the travel flag). The BBC radio networks (national and regional) take advantage of the EON system so that if you are listening to BBC Radio 4 (national), and BBC Manchester runs a travel bulletin, the RDS on Radio 4 tells your radio to tune into the strongest frequency for BBC Manchester (via the AF). All the BBC RDS is sync'd at Broadcasting House in London so it's really quite clever.
 
here's another one...college radio station ???...just got our RDS from invonics too....all of our music is in Scott Studio alphabetically by LAST name....RDS wants to display the artist as "Lennon, John" instead of the other way around....any suggestions how to fix that?????
 
Ehh, I think ours does the same thing. May be kind of a tough one to remedy.
