RDS Typos

I really hate to be so picky at LBI, but seriously, get it together. Both their RDS and HD data are wrong.

Here is how "107 point9 is supposed to look,
<img src ="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/oldjohnny/01-12-08_2120.jpg">

But here is how it actually looks.
<img src="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/oldjohnny/01-12-08_2122.jpg">

Looks like they don't know the difference between a comma and a period.

The HD data displays part of their information backward, if my memory serves me right, it says "9.69 y 9.701 oidar OX"

(sorry, tried to edit it to make the pictures appear here, but no luck, anyone know how to do it?)

OldJohnny.... buddy you really need to disconnect from that hand held radio and enjoy life.

I do know the difference between a comma and a period. I am using the built-in RDS generator in the Nautel exciter. The software in the exciter has a bug. That is just one of the bugs that are fixed in the latest software version. I have the latest version; I just have not loaded it into the exciter yet. If it bothers you that much, I’ll jump on that right away.

To be honest with you I forgot.... I know.... I shouldn't have, but I did. Please forgive me.

As for the HD info.... We decided not to run the Song Title and Artist information at this time. So in those fields I put the station information.

(or something along those lines)

I typed the one line in backwards just to be funny. I made myself and a few other people around the office laugh, and I just never changed it. I'm sorry you could not see the humor in it. I guess I’m easily amused. Give it a week or so and I'll change it again.

;)

You do know I did say,
I really hate to be so picky at LBI

Radio is a part of many people's life, I know I was picky, but if I knew it was a small office prank, then yeah, I would have had a small laugh.

I'm not trying to ruin your parade, but pranks like that should be taken outside the work place. I don't know if Lenard would get a laugh at this or not (more likely he won't), but I think he wants his stations managed correctly; as in no pranks over the air.

Again, nothing against you.

But if you are willing to grant one of my wishes, then please, fix the HD synchronization. Both station literaly have like a 9 second delay. Again, I don't know what the situation is, but I'm shure it is fixable. Remember, they are rimshot stations and HD drop outs are bound.

But I will give you "props" because KTJM is the best rimshot IMO. Even when it was on the original Devers tower, it had a very decent signal. KQQK is also good for the 90 KW that has assigned. Keep up the good work there.

Thank you. I think KTJM sounds pretty darn good too. I still have a long way to go and I realize that.

I hate the fact that there is a delay between our analog and digital audio as well. One issue is our processors, Orban 8500. They do not have enough memory to delay the analog audio. I am using one processor to process both the analog and digital audio. Orban promised me back around Thanksgiving that I would have the new motherboards for my processors. They have not come in yet. There are other ways to delay the audio. I could do it in the exporter or in the exciter.

I don't like using the delay in the exporter. If the Exporter, which is a computer, dies then your analog is off the air as well. I had this happen to me already at Bay City KNTE and KXGJ. 2 hours is a long drive to re-seat a sound card in a computer that just took your brand new 5 million dollar station off the air. Yes there is bypass switching, but once again it is being fed by the Exporter.

At Bay City I am currently delaying the audio in the exciter. I have had very good results doing this. This is how I may end up doing it at Devers. I must first overcome some monitoring with delay issues at the studio. This will be done and then I can start sync-ing the audio.

You didn't ruin my parade..... There are allot of mis-understandings about Lenard and LBI. Don't believe everything you read on this board or what you hear about him. He has a sense of humor. I've seen him smile.

Well im nobody here im just a fan, but tell Mr Lenard that he is doing a great job. And that we love all his stations, La Raza, El Norte, XO, La RAnchera. This is what houston needed good quality spanish programing. Compared to Univision there programing sucks.

Well, I do have an odd question, is KTJM running higher power on its HD than it is supposed to? I find it very weird that KFNC goes off (as in non excistent)to the Northeast side of town (Willowbrook area) and KTJM is still on. I realize that both stations are on very different sites, but is KTJM running more than the 1% it is allowed to?

No we are not running more than allowed.

Our method of Analog+IBOC transmission is Low Level Combined (Common Amplification). The combining is done in the exciter so the ratio is set and maintained by a pre-correction circuit. My transmitter does IBOC and Analog all in one BIG solid state transmitter, Nautel V40. This is the same for KQQK, KTJM, KNTE, and KXGJ. However KXGJ is a Nautel V20.

I think we have an advantage, in that our system was designed from the ground up with IBOC in mind.

KFNC is on a tower quite a bit further south. I did not know they were running HD. I’ll have to listen to that.

They were on this past week. I can't listen rightn now since I'm closer to KWTX.

What kind of tuners do you guys use to be able to pick up KWTX all the way by Houston? My experience has been, around B/CS it's gone. I used to do alot of work out by Galveston/Tx. City and Shreveport, LA. (currently unemployed, was working on hydraulics)

I am currently using the JCV HDR in the truck, and at home I have the Day Sequerra M4. I have an FM 5 element antenna in the attic. I have yet to hear KFNC in HD and I am not to far across the the bay from them. But OldJohnny says he can pick it up. I'd like to have the same type of radio he has. What type is that OldJohnny??

I said I was able to hear them in HD a week ago, I haven't been in Houston in about a week. I'll spin around to see what I hear sometime next week. It may be off since Cumulus has turned off and on the HD signal.

Take the summer as an example, their station was in HD with a horrible delay that was messing up Mike and Mike in the morning (after that, nothing much to hear). They used to turn it off and on back then. One day it was on, the next day, it was off, then the week after that, it was on again.

Stay tuned in. I'm using the same radio you have (KD-HDR1) so your signal is not handicapped. I'll spin around next week, if you are not receiving their HD signal, then it is likely off.

I quit using HD it didnt work the way I wanted it to, I'm back to analog. I'd like to get a analog reciever with RDS.

Here's my RDS typo story:

Two years ago, I installed our RDS encoder at one of our Mississippi affilite stations. Eager to please the friendly local, I entered his requested slogan of "JACKSON'S HIT MUSIC STATION" without checking to see how the encoder would automatically break the string into 8-character blocks.

You got it: on the way out of the driveway, I confidently punched on the radio to see
JACKSON'
S HIT
MUSIC
STATION

I think the tire tracks are still there from me heading back in to fix it.

Thats a a funny one.

The JVC HD receiver I have does not have RDS. I have no way of telling if my RDS is working unless im in the wife's car.

Yeah, I think there is no such think as a JVC HD radio with an RDS feature. As you can see, the pictures I showed you are a complete different stereo from the JVC KD-HDR1.

Don't worry about that one, it still happens in the Houston Area a lot. Just scan your Radio and you'd be surpirsed how many times you'll spot this type of error.
