Is anyone running these bareback without a mic. proc.? I "acquired" a few 2 weeks ago and I want to run them in a prod studio with an O2R. I tried rolling (BLEEP) off, on and all around with every eq setting I could twist and it never sounded full. Always sounded thin, both mic's. No money for any mic proc...

On FM, I have never been able to make thes sound good. And trust me I tried. I can always tell what stations run 27s. They always sound like mud.
 
EV RE-20. Often imitated, never duplicated.

Stick a compressor on it with fast attack, fast release, 12:1 and very low threshold, nudge the bass up, nudge the mids down, nudge the highs way up. Let the station's processing do the rest.<P ID="signature">______________

Yeah, I never understood why the folks at EV felt they had to try fix what wasn't broken. The RE-20 IMHO was, is and will always be the best Mic they made.

I always hated the sound of the EV27's.

Valley People mic processor and a Rode NT-1. Lordy mama!

That's another thing, I am still not sold on the Valley 401's. I know a lot of people swear by them but I just don't care for them. Likie the comp section but not real fond on the eq section...FWIW

You are dead nuts on there. You can hammer the final in with 'em and then use 'em on air.

I wish I had a compressor to put on them. There is no money in the budget for them as I was told, "you've done without 'em for this long".

I have them in all our studios...can't get them to sound like i really want them to sound, but they are close enough. Actually had to change one of our production studio's back to an re-20 and sounds great...

you're right though...you can't use them raw. they must have some sort of processor. they may look pretty being all silver, but the re-20's still have my vote.

Ebay it for a behringer compressor...not a voice processor...just a basic compressor. You'll need a preamp if your board doesn't have a send/return.

My production room doesn't have a processor on the RE-20 and it sounds like regurgitated ass. It's like night and day between spots when one compresses the mic (software) and another guy doesn't.<P ID="signature">______________
