Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

I recall hearing Stan, back in 1975, when he was known as Charlie Brown on KTSA. Is he retiring? A google search doesn't shows anything about him leaving WOAI radio. ???

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Thank goodness Joe Pags got a new contract a couple of weeks ago. </sarcasm>

I'll miss Stan. Maybe he'll end up at BMP somehow?

Peter Bolger Strikes Again.
In this ad market, it's likely a given that cuts had to be made. Bolger's just the guy who makes the call. The slagging on Bolger would make more sense if you were offering alternative cuts.

Personally, I'd have cut Joe Pags and gone syndicated. Don't like his local show with non-local content. Don't care for all of the bluster and vitriol he brings to PM drive. Who would you have sent packing?

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

This posting from the TAB jobsite says everything about what the once-great WOAI brand has become under Peter Bolger. Makes it completely understandable that they got rid of Bob Gutrhrie and then Stan.

"Description: Clear Channel Radio is looking for an experienced news anchor/reporter who is willing to be creative than you have ever been before and cannot be bound by old fashioned ideas of what is and what is not news. Must be fearless, flexible and a GREAT writer who has a passion for the profession. Ability to come up with ideas is far more valuable than a journalism degree or experience ins an 'old fashioned' newsroom. Must appreciate the value of New Media.

Requirements: Minimum high school diploma"

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Good post, bobbranson. It explains a lot. I was especially struck by one sentence from the ad.
Must appreciate the value of New Media.
I'll bet the tweet I posted is from Stan's replacement, because it clearly came from someone who gets new media.

I get it now that Bolger is making some moves to keep his news-talk station relevant in a world that's full of competing sources for news and talk.

I'll admit that some of Stan and Charlie's wistful reminiscing about 60s music and disgust with about 90% of the movies and TV produced after 1970 got tiresome. I can imagine that Charlie's openly-expressed disdain for new media turned off most listeners under 34. I wonder if he'll be part of the retooled show?

Was that job posting very recent? I don't think it was mentioned here that City Hall (based) reporter Bud Little retired at the end of 2010, ostensibly to run for city council. I fear that WOAI will pay even less attention to city politics if he's not replaced. :(

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Didn't realize that Bud Little has retired because this was never posted on this board. Bud little told me in the mid seventies that Bob Gutrhrie hired him.

Personally, I don't expect Charlie to be on the morning show much longer. I'm very surprised they put him back on mornings in the first place.

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Daypart, the job posting was just a couple of weeks ago...right about the time of Steve Soliz' tweet, so he has already been hired when it was posted. Steve did traffic at OAI until a couple of years ago.
Your point about new media might be valid, except that Bolger fired the guy who knew more about it than anybody else in the building a month ago, and is now trying to hire someone to do web and new media.
Don't look for Bud to be replaced, and you're right about city hall coverage. Hardly anybody has the luxury of beats anymore.
Probably also on-target about Charlie. I'm told he is working without a contract, and it's probably only his ratings that have saved him. But with Gutrie and now Stan axed....how long can the numbers hold up?

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

They are really stripping that place down. Pags has been off, so they're just piping in Michael Berry from KTRH. They don't even have an 800 number for the San Antonio listeners to call. Also caught one of their news updates this afternoon ... NOTHING local. 2 pieces from Fox, plus some random stories from the border and from Galveston. Nice job, WOAI. And they had someone filling in for Jane Bray on traffic last week that seemed to have little if any experience. Have to give her credit for trying, but ...

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Also ... it's been going on for a while now, but nights and weekends you hear the same traffic reporter on KTRH and WOAI at the same time, so clearly one isn't live. Lord knows how far in advance they tape those things. Useful, huh?

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Sound like they are stripping WOAI down to the bare bones.
Maybe they are feeling the competition from KTSA? Haven't heard where KTSA has cut back their
staff to the extent that WOAI has in the last week or so. I recall in the early 90s where they
had Live talk shows almost 24 hours a day on the week days. That is why this is so hard to believe.

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Dumping Stan is a mistake.
I remember when he used to pull 50 shares on KTSA, back in the day.
And how can you replace Bud Little? They don't make newsmen like him anymore.

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Hey branson:

Bitter much? You're son got fired from clear channel. Get over it. p.s. Are you the first father/son team to ever get s-canned by the same cluster? Maybe you should have passed along some vital tips on how to keep a job. He'd probably still be on the air.

as for woai... I was shown the email about stan's firing from a client. It said Charity would be the sole anchor. Guess the new guy they're hiring will replace Bud. Hoepfully, he'll take over that city council beat. For someone who is working all the time, it's good to hear in my car, what's going on with my tax dollars.

oh, and feeling the competition from KTSA? I can read the arbitron like anybody else on this site. WOAI is pulling five shres. KTSA is pulling 1's. Not much of a competition. I'm a news junkie and I've seen a couple WOAI stories on the Drudge Report. On the WOAI facebook page (okay, i'm a p1. sue me) they talk about one of their reporters being on CNN.

My loyalty is getting the best of me. time to get back to work. daddy's got mouths to feed.

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

So are we to assume that this "new media" is no longer news or information, merely biased propaganda or simple minded entertainment for the dim witted, attention and educationally deficient modern populace (who will no doubt take vicious offense to this and hurl volumous labels at anyone who doesn't goosestep to their agenda)? Don't think its true, just take a look at your local or national newspapers and TV newscasts. Shallow biased reporting, internet urban legends, happy news about losing weight thru smartphone use and so on. CC gutting local programming reminds me of my college days working for a grocery store. Eventhough the chain had stores here in SATX, our division and HQ was located in Houston, so every ad, promo, letterhead, etc read Houston. If you listen to WOAI, get used to it.

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

I don't know these people and I'm not from Texas, but this thread is amazing. More than 1,000 professional radio newspeople have lost their jobs in the past five years, here we have a highly regarded heritage station that is hiring, and people here are complaining about how the job posting was worded?! Really?? Sounds to me that some people are trying to come up with rationalizations why they didn't get the job. From everything I see here, the people who run WOAI are pretty smart...they're hiring at a time when lots of Clear Channel stations are cutting news reporters, one poster said they are quintupling the ratings of their competitor. Maybe if you followed the advice of these smart people and learned what it takes to get a job as a radio reporter in 2011 rather than sitting around bitching that it's not 1977 any more, maybe you would be as successful as they are. And happy. Just a thought.

Re: Goodby Stan Kelly

Look at the ratings and you'll see news/talk in general is in trouble in SA. WOAI barely makes the top 10 with their monster signal and expensive programming.
