Re-Launching wncradiotv.com

I started a Website, wncradiotv.com, a couple of years ago with the idea of preserving history about radio and television in the western third of North Carolina. While I had a good launch, the site has foundered with my work and raising 4 kids. I have kept the domain name active, but no new content has been posted since the start.

I still want to develop this Website, and with new technologies, I am considering re-launching it in the wiki format. That way, anyone could post content to it and not have to go through me. So I'm wondering how many of you would be interested in this style of a site and would contribute content to it? My policy would be to moderate vulgar, obscene, or defamatory content, but let the community develop and police the entries.

Please post any comments and questions here. The site is still active at www.wncradiotv.com.

I'll be glad to help out on the site in anyway I can. I would love to see the original idea come about in any way possible. There is a lot of history that needs to be preserved by those who know it, while they are still around. Probably some has already been lost.

If you want any help from me, just drop me a line and I will do what I can. I have a bit of experience in web design etc, to go along with my years in radio.

Here's an update.

I'm installing the Mediawiki software on wncradiotv.com, so I'll have the wiki active (I hope) by the weekend. I invite everyone on the board (and anyone else who would be interested) to help us build this resource of broadcast history. I'll post details when we get the wiki fully configured.

The Wikimedia software has been installed and I'm in the process of configuring it, so I hope to invite everyone to make entries at wncradiotv.com this weekend. I will keep everyone posted on the status of the new wiki on the board.

I have a couple of old Broadcasting yearbooks from 70's and 80's. I will post some info from them to the site.

UNCC has all of them going back to the 1960s. I don't want to drive over there that often and pay $6 to park, though.

And I have other stuff I need to do on the computer.

I guess this shows how long I've been out of the business. Broadcasting Magazine is no more, right?

It's now "Broadcasting and Cable". In magazine form, it's still a useful tool, but they provide very little content online that's not tied to a subscription...and the price for either print or online is still quite hefty.

One time a guy came to my door selling magazines and Broadcasting & Cable was on his list.
It didn't seem legit because the price was so high, but then it turns out their price is high anyway.
Well it was probably higher through that guy than the magazines I would have received......

Matt, Do they still publish the yearbook? That's all I would be interested in however, I remember, if you didn't fill out the form with the info and send it back to them, it was no good anyway..I remember it being pretty expensive. APE!

They do, but it's almost worthless as a reference work. I have to send them page after page of mistakes I know about every year when I get a chance to see the new one. That's mistakes I KNOW about.

They've had WBAV listed as "adult contemporary" for as many years as I can remember, even though it has been R & B adult since 1994. WEGX Dillon, SC, has been listed as gospel for years, yet it has been country since 1993. Sunny 105.5 in Darlington, SC, which I heard play "Hungry Like the Wolf" last October, is still listed as "easy listening". Which it has never been.

And for WOLI-AM they have all the information for WORD, while for WORD they have outdated information for WSPA-AM. WORD and WSPA traded frequencies years ago.

All of this I tell them every year.

Unfortunately, they will probably not change any of that for you.

As I remember from years ago, they gather information from each station. They only publish the information sent to them by the station. If there are mistakes in the book, only the station affected can correct them.

Do they want a reputation as unreliable? Especially considering what they charge for those?
