Re: Radio in 5 years (Jock Itch)

Dear Jock Itch

You are correct corporate radio is down sizing all local help and local talent. The problem is as commercialized radio becomes more and more each day the interest of radio will decrease and move to satellite radio or other venues and that will also trickle down as it is right now to local sponsors. Once local sponsors have found other interests in entertainment they are decreasing entertainment level of attention locally is lost so is the local interest for both listeners and marketing and now you have only the Wal-Mart’s of radio trying to hunt for the few dollars and eventually the whole industry will become like it is now unlistenable until we bring back local stars that understand that marketing, networking, and entertainment it is like walking in to a middle east rug store where thieves are robbing thieves. I hope that corporate radio while in the process of down sizing their cost do not down size themselves out of instiction

The fact that with the exception of the dreaded 100.3 frequency, which frankly going back to KKB,Z100,or The Hawk never housed a better or worse station than most that survive & prosper.....everyone has a piece of the pie that's enough for them. I'm not anti-corporate radio but because of it there are stations that survive in spite of themselves. PDs are looked at as successful, not because they know how to turn out an entertaining localized product but because they know how to work within the corporate confines.

As far as local stars that understand what you've described
(1)They wouldn't be hired
(2)They're smart enough not to take the jobs even if they did get offers

Most AM music stations of the 70s & 80s put out a better product than many FMers do now. Providence radio is not awful, nor are the people in it bad jocks. Too many just don't get it. Frankly the smart way to go is production as far as any kind of future unless you're a high profile person who has worked to get there. Even jockless stations need production people.
