re: TBN in NYC

re: TBN in NYC

A week or two ago, I posted on the board concerns about
TBN starting up in NYC- I went to the TBN website and I
was reading a digital coverage map of WTBY-54, their
station in Poughkeepsie, NY and it looks as though they
are expanding the digital signal to cover all of NYC.
so I imagine you must have either a digital TV or get
digital cable - provided the cable system even carries
the station - and with certain systems (Cablevision's IO,
Comcast, Time Warner etc.) you have a LONG wait to see
any new cable stations get themselves carried on at least
digital cable. WTBY's digital signal is UHF channel 27.

And some time ago, when TBN announced their expansion plans for the New York market, they talked about WTBY-DT being able to cover New York City proper BETTER than the analog signal. They are short-spaced on channel 54. Unless tropo was in effect on a really good night (and not creating a battle with WNUV-TV in Baltimore), or if you had a really good antenna, one would get mostly snow on 54 in the Five Boroughs.

As for cable and satellite, TBN offers only its national feed to service providers in place of carrying their local stations. This is despite the fact they have been one of the main recipients of the "must-carry" rule -- something they're now pushing once again for its digital multicasting. Through the Congress, TBN is trying to force cable systems in markets where TBN has a digital station on the air to carry all five of its networks -- the main TBN, TBN Enlace (in Spanish), The Church Channel, JCTV, and Smile of a Child, a new childrens' channel premiering today (12-24).<P ID="signature">______________

The digital signal is a little stronger in the city itself than the analog signal and the properties of digital (you either get it or you don't) make it a little more likely that someone could pick it up, but to say that they're expanding their digital signal to cover NYC is a stretch at best. It's a rimshot and will be for the foreseeable future.
