Re; WDJO

Oscar, you nailed it, and yes they are passionate Radio people that have Radio Management, Sales, on Air, & Promotional experience all in the Cincinnati market, that's from a good source that knows them all and you have not heard the best part, what will that be ? well that will becoming soon, according to my sources. I can't wait til the na'sayers hear what they have planned,Oh yes the night time signal is being taken care of ,I have been watching the engineer's do their thing, taking care of the Chicago station that has been causing the problem, you will notice a difference soon, if not tonight.

Your sources had you posting on this very board that the station would be all-Spanish. That was posted less than a week ago.

You may turn out to be right, but color me skeptical.

There's no legal way to keep the legal Chicago interferrence from being less than 44mV. They'll not go to their night signal at 4 in the afternoon to help WDJO. The only way to cut back on Chicago's interferrence is to blow illegal power, and a lot of it, up the tube.

Plus, Salem still owns 1160/Chicago, so good luck there.

There's more to that

Salem hasn't yet moved WYLL in Chicago to its new nighttime pattern. When they do, it will shoot north towards Milwaukee. That means no major signal will come towards Cincinnati. From what I've been hearing, part of the deal to buy WBOB was that Salem would make that pattern move and help to improve the night signal here. If that's true, it should be happening soon and that may be what WizOfRadio is talking about.

Re: There's more to that

WYLL is using the new night signal. The new signal has been licensed, meaning they don’t even have permission to use the old one any more. WYLL reduced the interference levels on 1160 in Florence from 42mV to 33. If a decent signal is ½ the interference level, that means the station is pretty bad past the 16mv contour. That’s as good as it gets, and that means the interference free signal still doesn’t get to downtown. As a practical matter the new WYLL modulates better, so the interference should sound worse.

WKRC has an interference allowance of about 2, meaning the signal is decent to about 1mv, which is about what 55KRC has in Lawrenceburg at night. WKRC is better at night in Dayton than WDJO is in Cincinnati relative to the on channel noise.

On nights where there is little skywave from Chicago, WDJO will seem to be pretty good, but especially this time of year, they will suck eggs most nights.

The new licensed signal from Chicago blows about 4kw towards Florence.

Re: There's more to that

You may be right, but my understanding is that WYLL has NOT gone to the new pattern yet because it's not built. The new owners of WDJO are now planning to play hardball (FCC Action) with Salem if it's not rectified. THAT's what I heard. Don't know for sure. Doesn't matter to me. I get it on my toaster!

Re: There's more to that

Word I get is from a guy who eats this stuff for breakfast. I don't remember the last time he was wrong about something.

Re: There's more to that

WYLL should be using its new tower system but I still get fading interference just south of Florence in Grant County.

Re: WYLL has applied for an STA Extension

I thought WYLL was on their new night pattern but it does look like that not the case. Once they are, WDJOs signal should improve at night.

You know not what you write grasshopper about WYLL towers, signal, etc. They are on special authorization to extend CP due to technical problems on the south Chicago 6 tower farm. They were experimenting last night for 2 hours, and switched back to the north side site. If you were listening to WDJO 1160am between 7-9pm you would have heard no interference from WYLL. I heard the switch at a little after 9pm while driving on I-71 near Reagan Highway.

Salem has received an extension on their CP for the nighttime site and pattern.

Tell your engineer friend, that he really should switch to Pop-tarts, because that cereal he's eating is stale.

Johnny!
