Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

The only way this makes sense is the sales weasels being to make Patron buys a package deal. You could put ESPN Deportes on a full class C FM and it won't draw more than a half point share in this market at this time.

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

Could make a run for the Spanish PBP for the Falcons/Braves/Hawks (not in the market, don't know if these exist or are already spoken for).

Do that, maybe sell some local shows, and you're making enough to keep the transmitter running with little staffing cost.

Some of the small indie Latino stations used to do Braves PBP, and I think someone is doing Silverbacks PBP en espanol, but AFAIK nobody is or has ever done Spanish PBP for the Falcons or Hawks.

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

I think ESPN actually pays for companies to run Deportes. Plus, the station can still sell spots.

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

WGST - since 1922, the Atlanta heritage station that brought Top 40 to this town in the 50s, brought an active, vibrant newstalk format here in the 90s, and been just one step away from greatness even though it has been owned by a company bent on destroying it, has developed into this:

Knowing what to do can be found in textbooks. However, most of the time, knowing what NOT to do is more important and usually learned through experience ("Boy, I'll never do THAT again!"), but Clear Channel has made it easy for us. So, thank you so much. Clear Channel, for the valuable education you have given this market the past 15 years. We now know how NOT to run a radio station.

Shame. :(

Maybe the WGST calls will come back to 920.
Maybe Salem could pick up the WGST calls for 920 and move WGKA back to 1190.

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

It will not work. I been working in the local latin market for over 20 years. There is no need for a spanish sports talk radio station. They don't have a clue what the spanish market needs. Big mistake. But is CC so they can do wherever they want $.

alex32347, you're right about ESPN Deportes Radio not working at 640 AM. You make a good point. Of course, Beasley Broadcasting Group tried ESPN Deportes Radio at 1100 AM WWWE, and it didn't last. Therefore, they flipped the format to combined English sports and entertainment.

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

I just heard a promo for a football game this Saturday on WGST, so it looks like WGST will live on through the weekend.

Interesting? Since when does GST carry football games?

Indeed. WGST hasn't done any football PBP since they lost Georgia Tech.

Unless it's futbol....? ??? :-\ ???

Didn't Dickey have ESPN Deportes on 1230 or 1340 at some point as well?

I would really like to know why CC thinks this will work. The only things I can see are signal and being able to bundle it with Patron in the sales department.

Then again, CC stepped in it royally when they rolled out Viva, which didn't appeal to the predominantly Mexican Latino population in ATL.

Side question: The AM band in ATL seems unusually prone to interference from traffic lights, especially at the low end of the dial. And 640 seems to be the worst in that regard (compared with other 50kW stations like WCNN, WGUN, and You Know Who). Is there something wrong with the 640 signal or frequency itself?

I ask because if that's the case, no programming will overcome that.

Actually 640 and 680 get out better during the day than WSB. WSB's problem is that shopping center that was built around the tower.

What makes it different? I don't know much about the nuances of the Spanish speaking populations nor the different music formats, and have always wondered. I understand that Mexican isn't Cuban isn't Puerto Rican etc., but not what the formatic differences are. 'splain?

WGST has the worst daytime signal (not counting directional nulls) of any 50 KW low dial position station, I have ever tried to listen too. All low band AM's can have issues with AC power-lines but WGST really get clobbered north of Canton. 650 WSM comes in about 20% of the daytime around here. Does 650 run AM HD and could that be messing with 640's signal I do not know. But 790's daytime signal is better around here that 640.

That's not true. WSB's engineers were involved in the construction every step of the way. No measurements that prove what you're saying have ever been done. In fact, a WSB engineer told me that tall trees surrounding an AM site could have more of a negative effect than anything done at WSB.

If you look at the coverage maps, you'll see that because of its directionality, WGST (daytime) actually goes farther north and south than WSB. WSB's coverage is theoretically a circle and there goes farther east and west.

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

WGST had been carrying Georgia State Football, right along with 1160. I guess GSU wanted a better night signal vs 1160? I am not sure how the GSU games will "fit" with the ESPN Deportes programming....ummm yeah.

Re: WGST going ESPN Deportes

I bet that doesn't last a full year ::)
