REA Modulation Monitor

Is anyone using the modulation monitor by Radio Engineering Associates (REA) for commercial AM broadcast? Here is the link:

www.radioassociates.com

It looks a little too good to be true for the list price of $399. I called REA and they explained that the monitor is marketed to the full-power AM commercial stations and that many stations are using it. They claim that it is just as precise (1-2%) and durable as Belar, TFT, and the others. They also explained that the low price is because the mod monitor is a new product (6 months old) and because it lacks the remote monitoring/control that the other manufacturers have. If anyone is using this monitor, I would be very interested in your evaluation.

Thanks!

i sent them a email.i don;t see anywhere in the description where it is type accepted, which may help explain the low cost, but it's looks like a pretty decent mod monitor and the price is right.of course we know all the bull you have to go thru with the FCC on getting electronics type accepted.

FCC type acceptance for AM modulation monitors is no longer required or performed by the FCC. I do not know the exact date the FCC stopped doing this, but it was part of the deregulation of the industry.

Hope this helps !!

response from REA.probabbly correct, but i've been away from the AM side for years and have not kept up with the regs.

Yes, I believe that mod monitors are no longer required to have FCC type acceptance. I called Ivononics and asked them whether their 520 mod monitor is type approved. They informed me that their monitors also are NOT because the FCC no longer does it or requires it. Interesting...

This REA unit is very appealing--basic features for the low priceof $399. I would definitely like to talk with someone who is using one.

Thanks..

The $399 price is not going to last long. Just an introductory price.

I asked if they were thinking of an FM unit and said not at the time.
