2am brought with it a certain level of tension. As I took the cab from Lincoln Park to Rush street, I adjusted the dial to 104.3. I was astonished to hear Ace of Base. Then I realized it was no longer Oldies 104.3. There was much talk up and down the street among the 18-60 year age bracket. People getting out of their cars in valet were talking about it. Obviously this is a big negative reaction. I am 22 years old and have listened to Oldies all of my life. My parents basically raised me on it. I would be in the car with them, and the dial was practically glued to 104.3 I grew up having a friend in Dick Biondi, The Brown Bag Lunch by Greg Brown, previously John Records Landecker in the morning. Anyone who believes the 60's format must be pushed out is obviously not consulting the or surveying a large enough group of people. Cause guess what, when you are out at just a bar, not a club, and an oldie comes on, people listen and sing along. Even the 20 year olds and younger since our parents listened to it, so did we, and we learned the words to every song. You've lost that loving feeling, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the supremes, the stones, ricky nelson, johnny rivers, manfred mann, ELVIS for heaven's sake. This town is very passionate about their DJ's on the radio, and have staunch loyalty to a particular station. But now, with no FM Oldies Format, I must reluctantly tune to AM 1690 which though plays great music, I consistently lose the signal when im in my car or in some parts of down town. And plus, the FM is so much better when that guy next to you pulls up playing some god awful music at a horrendous level of volume, and you can sit there and crank up the Beetles so they can hear you from Lombard to Cicero, from Arlington Heights to Oak Lawn, from Evanston to Blue Island. You can get lost in that Oldies music format no matter your age, believe it or not, it is loved by all, because they are the staples of true music. Go into a club on Rush, do you hear what the dj's have remixed their songs to, thats right oldies. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN by the Momma's and the Poppas is now a dance remix in some hot clubs like Level and the Leg Room. Obviously this music has astonishing appeal to the young and old. It gave people the opportunity across age brackets to come together and share in the music that reflected a changing time in American History. Im sure everyone has taken the CTA with those stupid Jack posters on the walls. Here is one. See Jack. See Jack Ruin Chicago Radio. See Jack beaten to death the CHICAGO WAY. DIE JACK DIE. Long Live Oldies 104.3, Dick Biondi, Fred Winston, Greg Brown, even good old John Landecker. Never fear, for Chicago will never forget the enjoyable times you brought to our great city.
