Read that article. I agreed with everything he said, in it. B-Ham could support an AAA type station, if it were marketed and programmed correctly.

I think Cox Birmingham will pay close attention to this column...investigate the information and the suggestions mentioned...and then change absolutely nothing.
______________

TheX, you haven't never lied about Cox Birmingham. That station group is quite possibly the worst in the state of Alabama. Yes, everybody I said the worst in the state because nobody has ran Birmingham into the ground more than Cox. The sad part of it is nobody has successfully tried to standup against them in any format besides country. This year, somebody better change strategy and try to take those retards down. It wouldn't be that hard if they put some effort into really trying.
______________

Looking over the 12 plus numbers it would appear that the best numbers the X ever had was when they were owned by Dick Broadcasting and they leaned AAA under the Alternative label. I don't know if a real AAA would work but a station like the old X, I think would do very well.

AAA would work well in Birmingham. It would never be a 12 + winner but in key money demos it would do very well. 18-34 and 25-49.

If you look at the breakdowns of the X and Reg's Coffee house and compare them over the last 5 books Reg beats the rest of the X in 18-34, 25-54, 18-49 and 25-49. That should tell you something.

Like someone mentioned earlier, years ago when the X was one of the highest rated Alternative stations in the country they leaned heany AAA. Nothing loud and heavy like they play now.

The proof is in the ratings pudding.

The X didn't really go loud and heavy as you described it until Tuttle and Klein came in...

The fact is that there best ratings came when they didn't lean young, loud and male. When they were more adversome and a bit softer and more to the center they had the best ratings that station ever had.

The old X pretty much was AAA with some active cuts mixed in. I can remember when tunes from the Coffeehouse would find their way into the regular rotation, and that never happens these days.

That's what I don't get. Citadel obviously has access to the data, they know the X is being crapped on by former fans, and they have tons of room to experiment since they're the only station in town that'll play 75% of their music anyway, so why not nudge the format around a bit to more AAA or more active and see if either would work better?

Agreed. Bring back Beaner and Ken LOCALLY, Hurricane Shane, Dave Rossi, dare I say Luka?, Suzie, Mark, Niki at Nite...any of those old combinations and make it AAA.
______________

> Alot of the success the station had back in those days was due to the fact that not only was the music listener friendly, the promotions were unique and fun. Dave Rossi is a genius at coming up with ideas, and Hurricane would dot the i's, cross the t's and implement them. Rossi and Hurricane were a great team, one complimenting the other. Neither one has really shone since the breakup of the origional X. Rossi is currently back in Charleston, SC running an alternative station that does ok, and Hurricane is rotting at The Eagle, doing his best to make a pretty boring station viable. Citadel (or whoever) getting those two back together would be a huge first step towards bringing back the fire and passion in Birmingham radio. We'll see what happens

It would be great if they brought back a lot of the old staff. Make the music toward a older demo like it used to be. Then maybe they can be one of the highest rated radio stations in the country again.

But don't forget back then they were owned by Dick Broadcasting not Citadel.
