Was in downtown Reading PA yesterday, (Penn Street Area), noticed all the Philly FM's were receivable in HD, some even came in with the 1 and 2 HD channels. MMR, RNB and KDN were also clear and they are the more distant. We are talking over 60 miles, same distance as AC or OC in Jersey but the signals are not as strong there, most Philly stations could be considered city grade signals. I guess this disproves my theory that HD does not carry that far, which it did....Noticed RAW running Shannons oldies channel and PAZ oldies also. Great metal format on 91.3 from some college, and as usual no local HD's, except for 107.5 and AEB..... Y-102 is the same stale whatever they do for ages, but with all the Philly signals why change, does anyone remember them with more power years back, 20kw with a listenable signal is Philly, what happened...

Didn't they reduce the power on purpose so they wouldn't have to divest of WRFY? Since the signal did reach into Philly, under FCC rules, Clear Channel was maxed out in Philly: 5 FMs. WRFY and WJBR-FM would have made #s 6 and 7. They put WJBR in a trust, eventually sold it. To keep Y-102, they voluntarily reduced its power.

You're incorrect here.

Reading is 42 miles from the Philly antenna farm. (48 miles from WMMR/WRNB)

Atlantic City is 63 miles from the Philly antenna farm. (56 miles from WMMR/WRNB)

Ocean City is 64 miles from the Philly antenna farm. (56 miles from WMMR/WRNB)

Reading is more than 20 miles closer to the Philly antenna farm than AC or OC in Jersey are...

I don't disagree about WMMR, but next time you're in Reading, listen to 107.9 as you drive around town. I think you'll find that WKRF overrides WRNB in most locations, you may even hear WFSI in some spots. Even along 422 between Reading and Pottstown, it's a real fight.

Concerning WRFY -- yes, in 2000 the power was reduced to 10 kW to avoid an ownership limit issue. A full Class B facility at that HAAT would be allowed 19 kW, so this reduced the signal by 3 dB. Another one of the great public interest benefits of consolidation.
