Real CHR in Houston... When?

Now that KRBE's grown up on us, when will Houston get another pure CHR? Digital 96.5 is a great station, but we need something on the FM everyone can hear.

If you don't know your history you're bound to repeat it and thats just what the clueless at KRBE are doing.

It happaned in 79-82 when chr was mundane. No Jingles, boring jocks, liner cards only. No processing, etc.

Then BOOM! KKBQ is born on AM. 79Q beat all the socalled fm chr's in teens and young adults, then it went to KKBQ-FM. By then it was too late for KRBE to get with the program. 93Q took over. Funny thing, 93Q was a hot rockin CHR and still scored well with 25-54 adults. Why? Because the jocks were PERSONALITY! Not little shit-heads screaming nasty vulgar vile on the airways every break.. Sure they got controversial and suggestive many times but never like Howard Stern or Dopey and Anthony or Walton and Johnson.

CUME-LESS just doesn't have the programming or management fire power to keep it on top.

Maybe CBS should take them over. NOT! ;D

CUME-LESS=INCOMPETENCE

Even if you listen to stations that have "personalities" now, they usually are restricted in what they can do. Management usually keeps a tight leash on them.

But also keep in mind that 93Q (as a CHR) completely flamed out after less than a decade, decimated by a dual attack from KHMX and KBXX, which drained away most of the audience.

The radio market may be too fragmented these days for a true CHR to succeed, and those complaining about how musically repetitive stations are these days have forgotten about the tiny playlists of CHR, and its progenitor, Top 40.

And personality radio can come and go. I remember AM Top 40 in the 60's with the dynamic formatics and high energy jocks. It was a welcome change from the often bland MOR that had previously dominated the dial. But I also remember people getting completely burned out on that kind of presentation, which helped fuel the migration to the more sedate and music intensive FM band in the 70's. Things that worked well years ago don't always translate to the present, and can turn into more of an annoyance than enhancement.
