Real Name and Fake Radio Names

Stolen from another radio board. Who on the radio in CT uses a fake name? Guessing fake names are used since most personalities are on more than one radio station, right?

I was told by my first PD that my real name sounded too "Ethnic"... I guess having a Russian-sounding last name at the end of the cold war in 1984 was a bad thing, and the listeners would've revolted, and burnt down the studios because a commie worked there, or something... :-\ I translated the name, and used that for 5 years. Then, when I got the gig at 13Z-Rock, I just used my nick name, and it stuck.

Now, mind you, I don't care who knows who I am, but many radio people are gonna take offense to people printing their name here. I'd try to avoid that, if possible. A lot've guys I know are pretty protective of their real personas.

Have a good one.

Ivan

I have it on good authority that "Wal-Mart Jeff" is the dude's actual name!

And how does he get away with that? Licensing fees?

Being a Clear Channel station I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't some sort of marketing agreement going on there.

In all my time being on the air on the radio, I always used a fake/air name because I wanted to keep my radio life seperate from my personal life. Radio is a part of my life, not my life.

How many here have had this experience: I jocked at a station a number of years ago. One day, after I finished my shift, I had to travel across town to a store. The store had the station I was working at over their speakers. As I approached the register to make my purchase, the person at the register asked the cash, check or charge question. After I answered, the clerk looked up at me and said, "You sound familiar." I didn't make anything of it. I just made my purchase and left the store, albeit with a semi-Cheshire Cat grin on my face as I left.

I have a friend who has always used her real name. Dana Lundon in Detroit and for awhile, she went by her married name, Masucci.

I always used DJ Kraze as I was doing Hip-Hop and R&B and that is what you do in that format, however, whenever the station did something along the lines of a local sportscast from the field behind the station (back when WESU was located at the basement of Clark Hall, right next to the football field), my real name would get mentioned as technical director if only for the fact that I ran a 1000 foot cable I made right out the window of the station, across the field, and climb up the staging for the broadcast booth. The whole thing took only 10 minutes to set up and most of that was in the climbing.

I did this even though the station had a line in the tunnel system that ran to the field, but physical plant was responsible for the junction box hidden in the ground and charge the station to wire into it. Not to mention the fuss about contacting them well in advance and such.

interesting you guys mention this board.
One station I worked for told me I could not use a fake name it was "too college"
a newer station I am in contact with thinks the fake name sounds a whole lot better!

the current youngest jock at any radio station does not use their real name.

Right, on Kiss, they have Munchie (?) and Skillett (or Frying Pan, or Casserole Dish, or whatever).

Or Crock Pot or Microwave or Blender or Grilled Cheese Maker or something like that. :D

I think if Dee Jay's wanted people talking about their birth names they would use them on the air.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when somebody thinks they are special because the know so and so's "real name"
"Do you listen to (insert DJ name here)? Oh...Do you mean (birth name)? Yeah he's my close personal friend...We exchange personal info all the time....Blah blah real name blah blah home address....blah blah medical records....were tight like that...;-)
How about "Do you know where you fav jock got their first gig...or who do they dig...stuff like that could be fun.

Please don't do this. Many of the people who choose to use a radio name work very hard to protect their private lives and their legal names. Radio is an entertainment industry, and it really isn't right to post their legal names here just because you know what they are, and you think it makes you look like a hotshot. If you know these people you would know that they take great pains not to use those names...and you posting them just shows what little respect and regard you have for others.
