Real Radio 105.3

Hello all,

I've seen some posts refer to a station in Atlanta that was called Real Radio 105.3.

What was that like? Is that a 'cookie cutter' type format like "Real Radio 104.1" in Orlando?

Just curious. Spent six months in Daytona Beach before moving up here and liked the Orlando Real Radio. LOCAL Talk all day (here I go again on my search for local talk!), and a fabulous weekend playlist that was semi alternative and semi rock. Very good station in my opinion.

Just wondering. Thanks much!

Real Radio was Clear Channel's attempt at having a full time FM TALK station in Atlanta. No music. I'm sure someone will correct me on this, but I believe it only lasted about 18 months or so before flipping to Spanish programming.

There was Alternative music on the weekends. And yes, it was a flop.

It was a lost time for Clear Channel. To think that a half-hearted Chris Rude morning show and "MJ (or some other name in the afternoon, which I immediately forgot) in the Morning" would pull an audience greater than 17 dogs&cats truly was folly. Ferrell in mid-days, for all his talent, never had a chance and was out of his element.

Folks are having a bit of a fuzzy memory here and mixing up 105.3 with 105.7, both Clear Channel stations. Christopher Rude was NOT part of Real Radio, which ran from January to September 2004, sandwiching the 80s station and Viva (which moved to 105.7 last year). Scott Ferrall was the only major local talker and he manned the middays. Bob & Tom originally started on Real Radio in the mornings and Todd Schnitt was drivetime. Then when the Regular Guys were bumped in March 2004 off 96rock, Clear Channel Atlanta moved Bob & Tom to 96rock and gave Todd Schnitt a double duty deal by taking his MJ in the Morning show (Todd goes by two names on two different time slots). MJ had been the morning show for awhile when 105.3 was 80s.

Most folks will agree Clear Channel didn't exactly put a lot of body english, marketing or programing bucks into its FM talk radio effort. And the ratings were accordingly miniscule.

Strange though they didn't care about the format here when it seems to be
successful in Orlando. I guess the product was really that bad here but it was probably one of the best stations I've ever listened to down in FL.

Speaking of Bob and Tom. Why don't any Atlanta stations carry them? Listened to them when I lived up Cincinnati. Again, good show. Sometimes over-the-top on the potty humor but very funny otherwise. Better than some of the crap around here!

Bob & Tom drew half the audience of the Regular Guys (who came back last April). They were not widely embraced by Atlanta. Bob & Tom seemed to rely on outside comics and perpetual guffawing. With the FCC restrictions, their potty humor was scaled back, leaving... not much.

MJ's name was Todd Schnitt. I still don't see what people like about Scott Ferrall. I've tried listening to him on Fox Sports Radio. I can only take a few minutes of him before I turn it off or change it to something else.

Didn't even last a whole year. It premiered in January or February 2004. It was gone shortly after Labor Day.

They're not talented enough to make it in a major market. They can brag all they want about having 150 affiliate stations, but when your biggest market is St. Louis, MO, you have nothing to be proud of.
