Power is running a promo about a big change coming soon. It started running today.

Does anyone know what this is? Contest, music, morning show, what?

Hey isn't that how IT all started?

You know, I still remember hearing 96X the summer of '86, when that Jamaican sounding 7-Up esque voice (I was told it was actually Darryl Gilley, better known for his Hollywood Honda spots), started saying "96...X...Isn't THIS the station that played the same sixteen records, over and over and over again??? A change is going to come..to 96....X"...This went on for quite a bit, and more hints were dropped, "WPOW Miami, Fort Lauderdale...The station that HAS been known...As 96...X"...They even went as far as telling jocks they couldn't mention the word "Power", since the supposed Jamaican guy "took their Power away", lol. (the station had actually used the "Power" handle before becoming "Power 96", they would throw it in here and there as "Power Hits 96X".

It all changed, think it was August 4 or 5 of 1986 when Power 96 was born and the rest was history....Hey, we're not too far from the 19th anniversary now are we??

Go beyond the main page (which looks the same).

They've fixed things that weren't displaying properly.
(Not important enough to list.)

Anybody have a tracking tag stuck in Bill Tanner's "coula" to see where he is now? He might have his burgundy Jaguar headed across I-10 right now on his way to SoBe. jaja

Calle Ocho...get ready!

Just about; I unseemingly acquired tapes of the Original POWER96 from '86 or '87 playing CHICAGO and Stacie Q back to back, plus classic '80s Y-100! Got to digitize what I've got laying around, and donate it to Airchexx.com.

I've kept tabs on POWER and every other station in South FL since '87; I'm curious if they're going to seque back to Top 40 or something.....

As long as they work towards regaining their former reputation as "Miami's Party Station"... and bring back the dance, I'll be happy.<P ID="signature">______________

Yeah, Power was interesting....Actually, radio in general was interesting in this market..I give the credit to I-95 for starting Freestyle here in Miami, at least that's where I first was exposed to it, art class, second grade, Freeze "I.O.U." came on and I knew I was hearing something totally different...Then WINZ-FM introduced me to Shannon...And the first Expose group (remember there were two groups? The original and the 87 one that lasted) Hot added more to the rotation but it was Power that pretty much dedicated a great deal of its' day to the genre.

But you're right, Power, in the beginning went as far as throwing songs like Europe "The Final Countdown" into the mix, Billy Vera "At This Moment", there was Bon Jovi in there IIRC too. One could argue this was why WPOW ultimately succeeded in becoming the leading default CHR, while technically being labled Rhythmic, Dance, or whatever the label was at the time.
