Real Time Sporadic-E Cloud Map!

My apologies if this site has already been posted.

Someone on the TX board sent me this link.

http://www.vhfdx.net/spots/map.php?Lan=E&Frec=MUF&ML=M&Map=NA

This site shows sporadic e clouds as they happen. Updates in real time every few minutes. In other words, if you see anything near or over your area, you might want to be near your radio.

This map has so far been very accurate for me. I live in West Texas and this evening, a couple clouds popped up on the map over the TX/NM state line. Sure enough when I went to my car and turned on my radio, I was hearing stations out of Canada and possibly Michigan.

This site is great for me because I do not have any special equipment. All I can rely on is my car stereo (and obviously, I'm not going to wait in my car all day for ideal DX conditions).

Thought I'd share this link with all the DXers on here, if you haven't seen it already.

I use it a lot, EggsOverEasy87. Whenever MUF is over 80 mHz, I check the radio.

I discovered that site a little while ago too and it sure beats constantly getting the radio and scanning the empty frequencies to see if there's anything going on.

If I see those triple digit numbers in the red shades in the right locations, I know I'll get something.

It's nice, but maybe I am reading it wrong. For example, this morning on the site, I see a cloud located halfway from my home in south FL to Philadelphia. That is supposed to mean that I should try to catch TV & FM outta Philly, correct?

As for me, when I get nothing at all, I point my FM antenna toward Bermuda, just in case something is cooking there!

This sporadic E cloud map is new to me and I will consider using it a lot. Sometimes I had earlier relied on weather maps and guys yelling on CB channel 6 for any possible E skip.

That site is fabulous for sporadic-E.

I'm a ham, focusing on VHF. As such, I'm always looking out for the rare 144 MHz (2 meter band) opening. When I first got licensed, 2m E-skip was talked about like Bigfoot -- it may exist but you rarely will see it.

But, using this page and the APRS mapper, I see 2m E-skip quite a bit -- maybe a few times a year. There was a nice opening last week. As MUF was rising, I just watching the MUF clouds map. And, yes, it was accurate. Once the MUF hit 130+ MHz, operators starting making contacts. I made a few, too.

The APRS map is awesome for tropo; this is the "go-to" site for E-skip.
