Reality Shows

I am so sick of the reality shows that have all pretty people except for one "off beat" person. Actually, the term "off beat" is not correct. I meant to say a real segment of society, an average person, a person like you and me.

I know the producers of the shows choose these people due to ratings but still it is getting annoying. The think that is the worst is the "pretty people" group together and huddle like scared rats when the average person begins to threaten their fantasy world. It just makes me sick.

Thanks for reading.

Reality shows are not really real and the name is a misnomer, not to mention they are purile garbage. About the only thing that could truly be called a reality show is Cops, since it is actually real and is way cheaper to make than these so called reality shows.

Reality shows are garbage....The worst TV programming to ever come out!!

I dont watch any of them!!!!!!!

yeah reality shows suck, when is this fad gonna end? im ready for it to end

How "real" can it be when supposedly "real" people doing "real" things are surrouned by two cameras and a production crew. It's still a put on and "real boring."

I prefer gameshows indeed. I do enjoy watching some reality tv shows though...just PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep the reality shows off GSN and keep them to their own network.
Thanks.

A newspaper cartoonist captured the essence of "reality TV" back during the first season of "Survivor". His cartoon depicted a "Survivor" contestant eating bugs he found - meanwhile, the cameraman filming him was munching on a nice, thick sandwich.

I think I read about a reality tv channel and I thnk Fox is involved with it. Did it ever get off the ground?

Read this at work yesterday. The music group the Pussycat Dolls will pick their next member on a reality TV show. SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE IT STOP. This fad needs to die quickly. It has had it's fifteen minutes now it needs to go away. The sad thing is many people find this kind of drivel entertaining. It's like looking at a car crash. You don't really want to see the severd human head but you look to see it anyway.
I'd personaly rather have all my chest hairs pulled out one by one with tweezers than sit through that crap.

I must vent!

This entire "reality" trend has sounded the death knell for decent programming. I fondly remember looking forward to an evening of *Must See TV* in, say 1997 or 1998. An evening full of good sitcoms, followed by a good drama or crime show.

It just seems like network TV fell off a cliff sometime around 2002 or so - with the whole reality thing. Even the non-reality shows are not as interesting as they once were. The comedies are rarely funny and the dramas are either centered around rich, spoiled 18-20 year olds or they have some weird kink. Either way, I don't like them because - to paraphrase Peter Griffin: "they insist upon themselves".

Network TV makes me feel as if I've aged 20 years in the last 5. And, I'm just not that old (still 25-44). As a reward for that, we got digital cable and rarely watch the big 4 nets anymore. Except FOX on weekend nights - that's still pretty good (except for The War at Home - which is a great time to go to the "office").

On the bright side, it's given me the opportunity to find interesting shows on the Discovery Networks (except TLC ), the History channel and others. Even PBS gets some viewership around our house these days. LOVE the britcoms.

On the other hand, I can't remember the last time we watched NBC. And, our viewership of ABC has been cut down to news shows and MNF (which is gone).

And, it all started with the proliferation of reality crap. It has ruined prime time TV as we know it. Just look at an old TV schedule from as little as 7 years ago (on the Classic TV board) and you'll see what I mean. Really sad. Watching that reality junk is like having a front row seat for the disintegration of our culture. I'll pass.

The funny thing is that the network execs wonder where the viewers have gone. I never thought that I would eschew prime time TV - I used to be the ultimate TV watcher. No more. Nice going guys!

By the way, there are at least 2 "reality channels": VH-1 and E!. For all intents and purposes, that's what's on there. And it is dreck! MTV and Bravo are not far behind. All in a headlong race to the bottom.

For the rest of us, it's prognosis negative....

Whew, I feel better now..... 8)

You feel better for having vented, and I feel better for having read your venting. You thoroughly and convincingly state the case for reality TV being put in the freezer, never to be thawed out again. Yet another poster said it's confusing that so many people think the reality drivel is so great. They think that way because they are of the lowest common denominator mentality to which too much programming panders today. Unfortunately, like some wrestling fans, they think reality TV is indeed "real." Survivor winners become "cultural" icons [very low culture, indeed], show producers pocket dollars, and everyone thinks they are happy. But crap is still crap, and reality television fits that descriptor precisely.

I think it is the young generation. They seem to love reality shows. Maybe because they never get the chance to see any of the good old shows, or even the great old cartoons I did.

Not only are reality shows ratings winners...they are incredibly cheap to produce. Except for prizes, you don't have to pay talent.

Reality TV is a fad, nothing more. Because of the cheapness, networks are going to squeeze as much out of this fad as possible, before they have to go back to paying for expensive sitcoms and dramas.

With the recent disaster of "The One" on ABC, I wonder if this fad is starting to come to an end.

Ok, so if it goes away, does it suddenly re appear again out of the blue if and/or when the next writers' strike pops up?
Could it be that the demand for such a show, (or reruns of them) may be higher than the demand for reruns of sitcoms if this were to happen?

I just want to see more game shows. Thats Game show, not reality show, and I hope this happens soon...

Speaking of old cartoons, even Saturday morning cartoons on the 4 networks stink now. It's all reruns of what is already showing on Disney Channel, Nickelodeon or Discovery Kids (literally). The 70s and 80s was a great time to be a kid on Saturday morning. The big 3 would air cartoons from 6AM until noon. CBS had the best saturday morning lineup in the mid 80s with Muppet Babies, Mighty Mouse, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Dennis the Menace, etc.

Sorry to get off subject, but reality tv really has stunk up bigtime. Just because it aims for the lowest common denominator does not mean it has to be trash (think Hee Haw). Except for American Idol, I refuse to watch reality shows.
