Good doctor, I usually have no beef with you, but on this issue I have to take you to task.
The Amber Alert is a good program. It has saved lives in many markets, and has the potential to do so in Arizona. I know if my kid was nabbed, I would want any effort made to get him back. If that means someone driving down the road has their music interrupted to hear a report from the cops, so be it.
The "quality" of the reports is irrelevant. It's a cop doing a report, all you need is the facts.
This may be idealistic, but broadcasters do still have to justify their license for the public interest. The airwaves are regulated by the government. It makes sense for stations to want to participate in the Amber Alert program.
By the way, I was part of the effort to bring Amber Alert to Arizona. I worked with JD Freeman, Art Brooks, and a bunch of police agencies to bring this here. Obviously, we worked with other GMs and owners as well. We worked hard on ensuring the system would not be abused, and on balance, it's worked well.
Not once in any of the discussions did any broadcaster object to adding Amber Alert to the EAS system because it might affect ratings, TSL or revenue. They all wanted to do it and participate enthusiatically.
