Rebecca Attacks Back

Ms. Aguilar just doesn't get it, does she? She asks, "Are you a trigger happy kind of person? Is that what you wanted to do -- shoot to kill?" and then claims it was non-confrontational? Guess again! The very questions are confrontational - I don't care what "tone" she uses. What, does she think we're all 4-year-olds that can't discern an insulting question because she says she asked nicely? With that kind of condescending attitude, maybe a different career would be better. Maybe she should try politics.

I read her side of the story, but im still of the opinion she needs to be paid out on her contract and let go.

...or I hear they are hiring at the Dallas County District Attorney's office? :D

Hey, maybe she should give PR goon a shot. It did wonders for R.J. DeSilvas career ;)

Barky says she's "embarrassed". Cripes, she SHOULD be!

It's too bad she was the only one shown the door. Anyone who approved that video should be on the same train as her. She can't figure out why she was dumped after she beat a 70 year old man over the head with a microphone? Good Lord, people like that are the reason I got out of TV news, they're all reporter.....with no humanity.

Oh, and that person from another station who texted her "good job" needs to be on the same train to nowheresville.

Same reason I left as well hoss, I saw alot of these "news hawks" for what they were, opportunitsts loooking to forward either career or personal agenda. It also depends what type of news director you have as well and how much editorial sway they possess.

From the cronies I have broke bread with, I have heard almost 90 percent of the angst is external. Most of the insiders may not have enjoyed her modus operandi, but appreciated her tenacity to ask the questions. He did shoot two people and for newsworthiness (yeah, not a word... hush), that begs a question.

That said, JD, I wouldn't be surprised at all. What would be more surprising is that no one encouraged her while she was out at said Dallas eatery.

So who is she married to at the Fox station?

Just wondering.

I'm not really sorry to see her go, myself. She did ambush the guy, but she should not be the only scape-goat.

Well...maybe some folks would be surprised. I was, and do wonder - if the job was good enough to merit a congratulatory text message, why isn't her public predicament big enough to warrant public support from the same person? As I've said, I don't think she handled the story well at all - but how she (exclusively) has been treated by her management is worse, and I've said so on the air. Private messages of support are easy and come with no risk.

And although Mr. Walton certainly appears to have been within his legal and ethical rights, I still haven't heard from any reporters how he answered the questions on the purchase application for that new long gun.

Jody, I was also suprised that somebody dropped her a "good job" text, I also find it equally disturbing that someone who calls themselves a broadcast journalist would endorse this kind of behavior. This is why I rarely watch local TV news anymore and instead get my news on the internet.

Don't throw them all out with the bathwater. Rebecca has her defenders on this story, but there are plenty of folks in newsrooms around town who were appalled at the questions, tone, editing, and/or overall spirit of the piece. Maybe not proportionate to the viewing audience, but I would expect reporters to defend one of their own.

And don't think they can't change their stripes. I made a vow when I went back to radio that if I ever caught wind of a reporter forgetting their humanity, I would out them on the air. No matter who. One did while covering an Arlington fire, we spent some time on it, and he wound up going back to the business owner with an apology. Like all of us, sometimes some of them just need a reminder.

Many (if not most) also hate the trite sensationalism forced upon or bred into them by consultants, news directors, promotion departments, and producers. Some reporters are given to it anyway, but may are revulsed by it. They know when they're feeding folks a load of bull better than anyone. I've stood there and watched more than a few say out loud, "I am NOT reading that."

Like Veritas and others, I still can't get over how that piece could make it past other sets of eyes with no realization that it was incendiary and biased, if only in its tone. A few years back I did a story on conceal and carry, and did a stand-up firing a handgun at a shooting range. I liked it, but the news director at the time ordered me to cut it - and explained that it would appear to some as if I was endorsing conceal and carry rather than covering it. I didn't like the call, but looking back I believe the ND was right. If someone with that kind of foresight had been in the chain to air at FOX 4, this whole thing might never have come up.

And I wouldn't be too certain of the Internet. If you have a pulse, you have a bias.

You hit the nail on the head Mr. Dean with this statement:

Many (if not most) also hate the trite sensationalism forced upon or bred into them by consultants, news directors, promotion departments, and producers. ."

Im not blaming all journalists(print, radio, tv), just the ones who get in cahoots with the "if it bleeds, it leads" crowd(which this story fell under). As someone who believes that journalism should be there to tell the story of what happend, not push an agenda, its refreshing to hear someone from the business reveal there were others who found this type of "reporting" extremely slanted. Im not going to go off again on my views concerning Fox/News Corp. and their agenda when it comes to reporting the news, but maybe this will teach their news department(s) to show more restraint when putting out a story.

Also, I agree that that internet reporting does have its biases, abeit left or right tilting. But, you have to filter through that to find out the truth

I get tickled at those who boast of their journalism degree. As I recall, many fairly succesful reporters never finished college. Want to be a journalist? "Who, what, when, where, why and how." Congratulations. You passed. Now...major in English or History if you want to learn something else.

Such as the fact that there is no such word as "efforting", or "monetize".

The only people who call journalists "journalist" are journalists. To regular folks, they're reporters. Or are supposed to be.

Two day suspension is too little IMHO. They need to clean house from top to bottom

Basically, Rebecca asked this gentlemen some tough questions, but that's about it. Just because her questions didn't meet the "Texas" mentality, you all are crucifying her. That's okay, but she may have to move to somewhere else in the country.
