Recalling the failed Spoiler Alert for the Miracle on Ice

Today (2/22) marks the 35th anniversary of one of the seminal moments in American sports history – the Miracle on Ice. Believe it or not, the game was not broadcast live, but on tape delay in primetime. The USA-USSR game was played at 5 PM ET in Lake Placid but not aired on ABC until 8 PM ET. Inconceivable to us in 2015, right? I mean, nobody in their right mind would tape delay live sporting events and save them for primetime in this day and age…

i have always wondered why abc didn't preempt the news to show the game live

People tend to forget that that game was not the title game. The USA had to beat both the USSR and Finland to win gold - very improbable at best. The USA had up to that point a terrible record against Soviet hockey teams and hockey was not very popular outside the northeast and northern midwest. ABC probably figured we would take a beating, as usual, and didn't want to interrupt their moneymaker. Possibly the only person on Earth who had faith in that team was Herb Brooks, the coach. Even the players seemed very surprised they could play with the Russians.

how could abc televise the gold medal game live if so many stations aired church services

This was a stupid thing for ABC to do - but just remember NBC does this all the time with the Olympics. Remember 2010? "Tape delay" in the Pacific time zone from Vancouver, BC, not only prime time but also daytime and overnight slots. That's one reason why NBC is hard to watch during the Olympics.

looking at the herald journal both WLOS and WSOC showed the us Finland game in its entirtey did any station skip part of the game for a church service

it was even pre-empted in Memphis for a church sermon

it was even pre-empted in Memphis for a church sermon

I can't figure why that would have happened since 8 PM ET would have been during prime time, unless it was some special program. I've heard before it was Bellevue Baptist, one of the major churches in Memphis, but they had (and possibly still do) a program on Sunday mornings. Would anyone with access to retro schedules have more info on that? Thanks!

wlos preempted first baptist asheville for the gold medal game

That may be what happened in Memphis was that the Gold Medal game was pre-empted if it was broadcast on a Sunday morning. I can believe that happening. It's times like this that I'm glad we have the retro schedules, if someone has any information.

My mother doesn't mind watching Olympic figure skating, gymnastics, or aquatics on tape delay, even if she knows the results. After all, we can see how the event unfolded.

And closer to the topic, it was my college dormitory's D.A. (desk assistant) who spoiled the result of the U.S.S.R. game for us dorm residents by announcing the result over the loudspeaker. That didn't stop myself and a bunch of others from gathering in the dorm's 3 tv rooms to watch the tape delay. I don't remember if I stuck around for Eruzione's goal or not.

I went to... church!... Sunday morning and and returned to the dorm to J.I.P. the gold medal game with a bunch of other dorm residents and watched the finish.

Oh, the college was what is now Kutztown Univ. The station was WPVI.
