Receiving Los Angeles and San Deigo radio

Which part of LA/San Diego metropolitan area in which you can receive both LA and San Diego stations? Oceanside? San Clemente?

They are two separate metro areas by ANY definition.

I would imagine up on a mountain in either Orange County or on a Mountain near Camp Pendleton (providing you don't get shot at) you might get both markets well. Just a guess. Maybe out on one of the channel islands.

I was in Beverly Hills a few weeks ago, and driving along Hollywood Blvd. I was able to receive some San Diego stations. The stations that I checked for and was able to receive was 90.3 FM XHITZ. After driving through that area I was on I-405 in Sepulveda Pass and tried out 93.3 KHTS and 105.7 XHPRS. Both came in fine but I didn't try any other San Diego stations. For TV, I visited a friend in Boyle Heights some years back who had a rabbit-ear antenna on his TV. I was fiddling around with the tuner and I from what I remember, I was able to receive channel 12 XEWT, channel 51 KUSI, and channel 69 KSWB, clear as a bell. One place in the Los Angeles area where both LA/SD stations would be clearly received would be Rancho Palos Verde, near the Port of Los Angeles.

Actually along the shore in OC from about Newport Beach up to PV in LA county gets many of the SD stations on FM. Many of the SD AMs come in almost anywhere in LA. The TV reception was pre-digital, so I don't know how it is now, but I could get most the V's from SD/TJ.

You should be able to get both LA and SD stations past Lake Forest if you're going down the 5 if you're going South to SD. I live in Tustin and I rarely get SD stations except for 91X.

-You can get SD stations up on Sunset Blvd, in most of BH and in and along the West L.A. hills.

More amazing:

-When you get past Magic Mountain and start the ascent up the Grapevine, the SD stations come in clearly almost all the way to the summit.
(91-X, XHRM, The Walrus, etc.)

-Up near and above Santa Barbara along Hwy 101, SD and L.A. both come in (KRTH, KLOS, KCBS, KBIG, 91X, XHTZ, XHRM, The Walrus, etc.)

-Along the 210 up above Glendale and East toward Pasadena, many of the SD's come in as well.

In San Diego County, you can get many of the L.A.'s all the way down the Coast (especially North of Mt. Soledad) and on good days, almost anywhere in San Diego proper. (Especially KRTH)

Somehow I know it's weird but when I was in Playa de Rosarito Mexico. I was able to picked up LA stations clearly especially 98.7FM

There was an area in Gorman, CA, about 5 years ago where I was able to receive 90.3 FM from San Diego and 104.7 KHTN from Merced. I was surprised at that time, as I was able to get a station from both San Diego and near Sacramento in one location. It was the elevation that was a factor, but still it was amazing. It's not possible now, as there is a booster on 104.7 FM in Bakersfield, so it blocks out 104.7 from Merced. I can also attest that San Diego stations come in on I-5 between Gorman and Santa Clarita as I was able to receive the San Diego stations when I went to Los Angeles recently. The elevation effect is also noticable on I-80 throught the Sierra Nevada as the San Francisco stations can be heard nearly to Truckee, in stereo.

San Clemente is pretty decent for most of the LA FMs along with San Diego (but not all from San Diego/Tijuana since you're talking about quite a few different sites the sticks are on.

Temecula used to be good for most LA stations but some are now blocked by local signals on adjacent frequencies.

When you get down into San Diego it gets tougher to bring in LA signals--KRTH & KLOS have the best signals. KSWD and KPWR would be next. When the local 102.9 used to be on Mt. Miguel, you could bring in KIIS well if you found a spot where Miguel was blocked but Mt. Wilson was not. In the 90's, that was a beach in La Jolla pr partway up Mt. Soledad on the North side..

Funny some asks this, I just noticed I was picking up 94.1 loud and clear in Azusa last night.

San Diego reception is very spotty in the LA area. You can get them at one point and then if u move less than a mile they can be gone.

I have gone past Santa Barbara. Stations like KLOS, KCBS, KTWV, KBIG, KHHT, etc. they all work fine in Oxnard and Ventura. You can receive the HD signals just fine on the little Insignia HD radio. Once you get towards Carpenteria and Santa Barbara you start to lose the singals of the all the regular stations. You are too far away to receive the HD signals and are starting to get too far away to receive the analog signals.

Some stations such as KROQ and KYSR are harder to hear. KYSR is around 75,000 watts but its tower is only in hills along Mullholland so its signal doesn't go as far as KBIG 104. KROQ only operates at around 6,000 watts and its tower is the hills near Glendale. In Ventura County its hard to receive KROQ. Where I live I cannot receive any San Diego stations on the FM dial. Only a few AM stations like the one on 600 KHZ.

South Orange County, due to the topography, is an interesting place for radio reception. Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Foothill Ranch, and Laguna Hills receive almost exclusively LA stations. A combo of LA and SD stations can be received in parts of Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, and San Clemente. Aliso Viejo and Laguna Beach are largely blocked from receiving LA stations, and the SD stations tend to come in better here. Again, depending on topography.

KGGI also comes in clear as bell in Rancho Santa Margarita. Or at least it did 10 years ago. I haven't tried it lately.

I think the quality of your radio has a lot to do with it too. I'm in Santa Ana and I get stations from San Diego all the time yet, I can't seem to get KDAY without interfereance.
