Recent Amazing LW/NDB Loggings (w/ portables, internal ferrite)

This week i've logged some new NDB's that have been pretty amazing considering what I'm using.

220kHz - BX - Blanc Sablon QC - 905mi/1455km
332kHz - YFM - 53.711800, -73.702904 (La Grande-4) QC - 790mi/1270km
278kHz - NM - Matagami QC - 595mi/960km
273kHz - ZV - Moisie QC - 590mi/950km

Stations up to 279kHz logged with Sangean ATS-505
Stations 280khz+ logged with Tecsun PL-660

here they are on a map

How sensitive is a typical well-designed small LW portable radio? With my Tecsun PL-606, a NDB on 397 kHz near San Bernardino, CA, was barely detectable (and not really copyable) and fading into the noise at midday near Temecula, about 40 miles away, using the internal 4" ferrite. At home, other than a fairly weak signal from a DGPS station on 302 kHz about 18.5 miles away, I get NOTHING, day or night, on the internal antenna. (For those who know the Tecsun radios and their signal meters, to give an idea of its signal, 302 kHz indicates about 15/20 or so.)

The farthest I've gotten with the aid of an untuned external antenna (resting the radio on a barbed wire fence runing up & down my street) is one from Boise, ID.

i also have a tecsun pl-606 and although ive never dx'd at night with it for these, my local daytime reception of ndb's is a lot worse on it than the pl-660 or my sangean.

the sangean picks up beacons that the tecsun 660 cant even get. i wish the band coverage on the sangean went beyond 279khz.

i should also not that on the pl-660, its easier getting copy when its flipped into sideband mode. it reduces the noise and since its just cw that your looking for, its still audible. ive found signals that way that i otherwise would have skipped over

On my G8 I get a beacon from Maniwaki Quebec all the time at 366 khz. It's over 60 miles from me, yet as time has gone by it seems to be getting louder. First time I heard it 2 years ago I could barely detect anything. Last time I tried for it, it came in as clear as 2 out of the 3 here in Ottawa do. This is without any help from any kind of antenna. There's also a very weak one at 400 khz from Pottsdam New York that I can always get. It's very faint. Even during the summer, Pottsdam's 1000 watt station at 1470 does not come in on the radio at home. Yet this little beacon does. I have picked up Montreal without the use of any antennas at 248 and 407 khz. Both with equal strength. Maybe the G8 isn't so bad after all. I've heard it's supposed to be dead on LW.

Logging yet another new one RIGHT NOW!!

351 kHz YKQ - Ft. Rupert QC

On the Hudson Bay!

720mi/1160km

Hey robotique, what are you using to determine the distance? fmscan.org gives me nothing in those ranges. :(

I've hauled in some pretty good ones over the years, but I'm not much of a logger...currently here's what I can hear, from my location north of Brockville ON.

236 kHz OW-Ottawa ON
239 kHz VO-Val D'or QC
248 kHz UL-Montreal QC

Not much, but I believe daytime hours are actually better...

This is getting interesting, I heard the Morse code signal on 350kHz with the Sangean 909X's internal ferrite antenna, and a much weaker, barely listenable signal on 332kHz, probably the mentioned QC location. The 350, where it's coming must be NE or SW at my VA location.

Im using google maps distance calculator. Im getting transmitter locations from this site:

http://www.dxinfocentre.com/ndb.htm

248 from montreal is pretty standard down here too.

I scanned the LW band with the Tecsun PL-390 here in Vermilion, OH last night but unfortunately I couldn't get anything on there except for the NDBs from Port Clinton, OH on 423 kHz (PCW) and on 419 kHz from Grosse Ile, MI (Detroit) RYS

Does the Sangean 909X do a much better job of picking up LW signals with the internal antenna than the Tecsun PL-390 does with its internal antenna?

Sometimes the LYQ beacon from Manchester, TN will come in loud on 529 kHz and other nights not at all and I too wonder what influences whether those signals can be heard hundreds of miles away or not.

Also, the Tecsun stops at 513 kHz for LW. Why doesn't it just go up to 519 kHz so there isn't a gap from 514 to 519 kHz?

I haven't had the opportunity to compare the LW reception of the PL-390 with the 909X's but plan to do so sometimes in the future, that is, when I have some free time to do so.

i've logged a few more since we last were discussing this topic. Check out this map i made:

Canadian NDB's seem to go the distance. I've also learned that there is a difference between high altitude and low altitude beacons which may also has an affect on ERP. I've also noticed that a beacon that is just two miles from my house serving a small airport is much weaker than one that is 12 miles away serving BOS. That beacon is further away but BOOMS in louder than the nearby one.

My record for NDBs is FCH-344 Fresno, CA. Roughly 790 miles. I pulled it out underneath XX from Abbotsford, BC.

Now if we are talking Global Tuners - I used both the Mojave Desert node and the former Albany NY Capitol District node for NDB DX. Both were really good on the good evenings for NDB. Best from Mojave Desert was DDP-391 Puerto Rico, 3300 miles. 2nd best was the flamethrower LLD 353 from Lanai HI.

From Albany my farthest I think was a 382 kHz NDB from Greenland. Roughly 1900 miles. That NDB dial is PACKED - 3 to 4 deep on some frequencies. I've pulled POH 428 Pocahontas IA and SYW Greenville TX at the same time, both 25W. Also the Storm Lake on 434 kHz also 25W, and IIY 435 in GA at 25W.

A half hour ago at 05:34 UTC , I logged DDP 391 kHz from San Juan Puerto Rico!!!!! 1683mi/2708km !!!! Tecsun pl-660 , internal ant

last night had very very favorable conditions for DX to the north and northwest of Boston. I logged a total of 8 new NDBs.... these are the first new NDBs that I've logged this entire calendar year 2014! This was the first time using the Sony ICF-SW7600GR too.

roughly 05:30 UTC - 07:30 UTC 10-30

373 2Q Mont Laurier QC 357mi/575km
386 D8 Dolbeau QC 671mi/1080km
400 PTD Potsdam NY 244mi/392km

414 3U is a local for me and the strongest of all the ones I receive. I also hear 400 PTD but very faintly. It is a good distance from Ottawa, and the AM from Pottsdam barely makes it here daytime. They're about the same strength on the G8.

212 SJ St John NB 336mi/541km
254 5B Summerside PEI 452mi/728km
317 ZMX Montreal QC 268mi/430km
329 OU Quebec City QC 300mi/482km
371 GW Kuujjuarapik QC 936mi/1506km

I logged 5 new ones last night. GW 371 beat out YFM 332 for the northernmost signal i've ever received MW/LW originating from North America

This DX season is kicking off nicely!
